what causes damp walls?

Ok.... back to the subject, it's now getting worse as winter is approaching. I've made a little video of the worst part of the flat. What are your thoughts and would you say this is a sign to get the hell out and look for somewhere new? The lanlord say's it's not a serious problem :S.

Sorry for my induction to the video. I'm no good at doing these things.

Disgusting, your landlord needs to see to it! If he doesn't do anything about it either move or go see a housing-ombudsman.

Lol ^

By the looks of it then, there's not much I can really do about it until i leave next year. It just feels disgusting living somewhere like this and having to constantly leave the windows wide open and wipe all the walls from mould on a weekly basis.

Do you think a dehumidifier would work?

It isn't acceptable to live in them conditions, do you no how bad mould is and what it can do to you if you breath it in all the time?

Do your windows mist up ? Is it condensing on the glass then tracking under the cill and down the wall ?

This could explain why both me and my girlfriend keep suffering with frequent flu's. Thankfully we have a meeting with the Landlord on Monday and if they do not fix the problem we will refuse to pay rent and move out because they are breaching their contract.

Couldnt tell properly but looks like you have a bay window, theres a good chance its leaking somewere, depends how they have attched the lead on the top.
Seems a lot for just condensation, get him to sort it that kind of mould isnt very healthy for you.

You'd be staggered how much moisture can condense on a cold surface in a room with 2 people in it overnight. It can be litres if there's insufficient ventilation.

I saw the video and had to have a quick shower!*

*obviously this is a bit of an exaggeration but I felt like I needed to anyway!

you look really like that COD guy who punched walls.....

you need to look into why the room is so damp in the first place, opening the windows will help but there is a reason for the room being so damp and opening a window wont fix it, neither will a dehumidifier, the damp will just keep coming back.

moisture will stick to cold surfaces, yes but where is the moisture coming from? the roof maybe or rising damp, i'd say the roof as their seems to be a lot of water there, its got to be something more than just dampness

Firstly, thanks mrbells for sending me the link, I am having a good browse through it now as we type. As for the window, I had a look on google and a lot of the window's I came across do look like the one I have here.

This is my first time I have moved out from my parents and into a place with my girlfriend, and to experience this amount of mould feels disgusting, especially when I've never seen it before in the past. It's something i really didn't want to deal with. But how can I spot these problems when looking for somewhere to live? I didn't have a clue that this would happen.
