I don't understand, its a digital cable, so 010101 goes in and 010101 comes out, it ain't like analog.

So why are they ripping us off, I don't understand. A lot of conflicting answers going round.

Home bargains £2.50
high street store a few months ago £30

Both do the same thing, not noticed any difference, only thing is that I broke the £30 one by moving the TV and the connector broke.

I tested a £50 hdmi cable against a £2 one I got on fleebay and tbh there was no difference so I don't really understand what the pricing is all about

I find most cables a con, in the pound shop I have picked up branded printer USB leads that the big high street stores sell for 15 quid.

scart leads were the same, the real cheap ones sometimes had audio problems but above about 4 quid I couldn't tell the difference.

Because exploiting stupid people makes companies money.

Very true....

My mum and dad went out to a local electronics store to get me a power extension to use for my pc and came back with a monster branded spaceship like thing with all sorts of crazy looking bits hanging off it... cost them £80

The guy in the store gave them the 'he needs this one' story and they thought they were doing good but just shows how easy it is to sell the more expensive items to thick people

so what your saying is that they all do exactly the same thing, as my £30 one was thick and had all this special orange styling!

lol probably, I only use cheapish ones now and have never had an issue infact I bought a 10m one for £3 on fleebay few weeks ago and its great

Get a 5 metre <£5 HDMI cable.

Spend an extra £1 on making the cable look super thick and 'quality', possibly a nice blue or orange colour to stand out over other HDMI cables.
Spend an extra £1 on the smallest amount possible of gold on the connectors.
Spend 50p on fancy packaging.

Put a sign up saying 'WOW - £80 High quality HDMI cable extra long at 5m! Only £50 when bought with a bluray player or television'.

Profit.

Here we have the first over GD thread where I have given details of the '???' before the profit.

Essentially no difference - slight possibility that if you buy a long cheap cable to watch 3D tv etc... on that it might not quite conform to HDMI standards (but unlikely you'd notice) realistically any cable will do.

The idea that a more expensive cable can enhance picture quality us outright fraud, all any cable can do is minimise errors and given that cheap cables are perfectly capable of doing this the expensive cables are redundant. Buying one makes about as much sense as getting a better printer cable in the hope that your documents look nicer.

£2.50 cable all the way. Average joe doesn't realise he is being ripped though and that's a crying shame.

I have heard that poor quality cable can have problems with long lengths, around 25m plus but as has been said, buy a cheap one. This site has a decent range but I got three from a competitor for £12 nearly 3 years ago.

To be fair to the average Joe though, it's really only online that you can find ones that are a realistic price, it's difficult to find them and know otherwise.

Last time I bought one in a shop was at Currys and it was only after I asked the sales assistant if he had anything cheaper that he took me to an obscure corner and found one for £15.

Worse still I was with my Father last Xmas as he was buying a HDTV in Comet. The sales assistant was trying to sell a HDMI cable with it for £80! I asked where the cheap ones were and he claimed they sold no such thing. He then started the spiel about how a cheap HDMI cable wouldn't be very good quality, I pointed out that it was digital so it didn't matter and he then proceeded to have an argument with me. Eventually he was just like "I think you are wrong, let's just agree to disagree".

So you can see how high pressure selling and a lack of alternative makes it easy to profit on cables.

ditto just bought the gf her first br player, £29 for a philips bdp2700 in richer and picked up a hdmi from home bargains for £2.49.

whacked a few discs on and she was gobsmacked
