*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

So, after 8 hours Play and being up to 2am (feel like crap now) here are my thoughts;

Pro:

• Quests - Never been so engaged by mmo questing. It may have a lot to do with voice acting but I find them more interesting and picking up bonus quests as you go everything seems to flow rather than see generic questgiver and go.
• Voice acting - amazing! Such a simple step for an mmo but it engages you so well, first time I have followed an mmo story.
• Graphics - they are good enough for an mmo, much more polished than most and do a job.
• Companions - Fun and interesting addition! Good to fight and be able to improve them as well.

Cons

• Companions - Yes I said they were a plus but on the flip side they follow you like a brain dead dog staring at you constantly. Plus EVERYONE has the sane companion, a bit of variance would not have hurt as it looks stupid in cities.
• Gear - Everyone looks the same :( this was a massive disappointment for me even allowing some basic gear colour changes or something because it looks stupid.
• UI - Fugly, horrible and intrusive. Sort it!!!!!!

Overall I like it, certainly will be playing on release and can see myself enjoying it a lot. I just think for all the money they have spent on making the game there are some basic/lazy mistakes which have been made which could improve the game with little to no effort.

Arrrgh I agree witb your points but lazy come on! It isn't easy making games.

Yeah, but do you not think that the fact that so many people latch onto this means they're dying for something new and original? It's a terribly pity to see developers forced into churning out identikit mmos because investors are too scared to let them do anything else.

Be interesting to see how GW2 does in this regard, big scary mmo experiment :D

Just the way the industry is, look at the year of sequels... Gears of bore 93 coming out soon. I have worked with Lucas arts several times and team that with EA we know who is making the decisions. As developers with external publishers we have no control. Look what can be done when for instance your Valve!

Just woken up from a power nap to see a few moaners and even quitters.

Quitting at level 6? The game doesnt even get going until level 10+.

Dear oh dear this is a BETA. On release things will be better i.e people will want to group to do things, guilds, less bugs and an excuse to not go visit family for christmas! :p

As for me this game is heaven. They took KOTOR and blended it with WOW and made the software version of heroin. :D

There will be a bind point probably by the entrance door - same style as ones at taxi pads - look like a podium a bit

Perhaps lazy is a little harsh but when they have spent so much and done so much to miss relatively small or easy to change things (gear colour is silly simple) it's frustrating.

All in all, thumbs up though!

Yeh gear is the worst offender for me, was really hoping for more uniqueness.

I agree, you only get your first companion at around level 8 or 9, then your advanced classes option at level 10. So how people can judge a game with so little time put in is just silly.

Actuually wab, he does make a valid point. If streams showed him the same 'i'll tell you why i need you to kill 10 boars' mechanic we're seeing in the starter zones, he does have reasons for concern. Rather than bashing people around for basing their views on level cap game play streams, tell them what more the game has to offer, otherwise you aren't doing it any justice.

As for me - can't really pass judgement on the whole game, as from the little time i've had with it I only managed to get a BH to level 7, however - compared to DCUO - I had more fun running around as a hero/villain. Sure the quests in DCUO were just as repetitive as the ones here (but hey - they too are all voiced!) but the new combat mechanic (even if it murders your mouse) was more fun/fresh than Bioware's offering =/.

I have no problem with people bashing the game, lol I have certainly done enough of that my self, its ignorant people who play between levels 4 and 6 and think they know the game.

Please you can not tell idiots what they do not want to hear, if either of these to pratts had any sense they would have played till level 30/35 then they would have a bases for discussing the game, the starter planets are pretty dull because they meant to get you used to the game/skills layout of the game, and has very little reflection on the game as whole, which many MMO follow the same suit.

And I am the last person people can call a fanboi as I have bashed this game unmercifully (its why our little scurrying rodent started reporting me).

Difference is I got to a decent level, and had a basis for my argument.
I believe bashing the game gets more things fixed than fanboi, so at a preference I prefer people who are going to have a pop at the game for the things that are actually bad (and yes there is quite a bit), but idiots who bash the game simply for the sake of it and have no idea what they saying just gives all the fanbois more ammo.

And no not one point of there comments were valid specially as they say the watched 'high level streams' (lmao) so they a) knew what graphic the game had, b) the type of questing that was involved, c) they heard the VO, so why now say they were bad if its what they expected ..in fact why even bother playing it ..

My last comment on this as they idiots and I'm wasting mine and everyone else's time on here.

SEriously am I missing some graphics option that enables higher options or something, is it defaulting to low on certain setups? Loads of people are saying great style, great graphics.

It looks like something from 10 years ago, completely smooth faces, flat everything, dodgy edges, woeful textures. Then things like the speech boxes look completely out of place.

Thing is everyone who has made a negative comment gets the same replies, " you don't get it", "you didn't play this one mission so your opinion is invalid" "you didn't play to a high enough level yet" etc, etc.

Can someone highlight specifics in what they love about the graphics? This is the thing I listed what I don't like, and WHY. The guys who knock it down just say, you're wrong because its great. To see if we're completely missing each others points, or see what the people who love it think, DETAIL, say why in more than three words.

You love the graphics style...... because........ maybe for me the game is running for some reason on the lowest detail level and the highest is incomparably better, but maybe its not?

Anyway, for me it just has that "new MMO" feel, as in the new breed of MMO, champs online and the incredibly awful Startrek, the very flat texture, the kind of kiddie feel, the move backwards in graphics.

Technically Champions online is probably using newer and better graphics techniques and effects than City of Heroes, but due to the style, it looks to me, worse, significantly worse than the really very old first game. City of Heroes has loads of limits as its a really old game now, but its going for "real" rather than this shiny, semi cell shaded, generic, no character look. I can't stand that style at all, because it feels so sterile and boring and frankly its using new techniques to replicate how really old games looked, except old games looked that bad because they were old.

Seriously, as with the post I just made before, explain why you think its good rather than saying its good.

More specifically I quoted both your posts....... rather than SAY the game is way better later on say WHY its better.

Because both of your arguments are the ones that come across as ignorant.

In Lotro, what you see and feel in the first 6 levels........... is the same as the last 6. Sorry but the impression of the game doesn't change from lvl 1 to level 75.

WoW, same, the game FEELS the same from lvl 1 to level..... 365 or where ever the hell it is these days. AOC/Guild Wars/War/CoH/CoV sorry but NONE of these games have a different feel from lvl 1 to lvl eleventy billion.

Movement, quest style, grouping methods, general game difficulty, world look, world feel, animation. 99% of the game is NO different in lvl 1 to level infinity. The powers you use change, the missions can change, the ultimate combat mechanics, style, look, feel of the game DO NOT CHANGE.

I don't know anyone who could make the other argument. Is Call of Duty somehow different at the start and finish? Is any game, you guys are talking about minor changes in the game, the MAIN parts of the game don't change. Does the speech interaction style change after lvl 10, no, do the textures get better, no, does combat style or animation improve, no.

But again, I make an argument, I actually explain my points, and most people will reply with a simply "you're wrong" with no detail at all.

Simply, HOW is the game different from at lvl 20 from lvl 5?

BF3's single player, it started off crap, it finished crap, the story, the weapons, the location was different, the feel and general mechanics, 99% was identical. I just really can't understand this "you can't judge it without playing every last second" attitude, its illogical.

Actually I can think of a single game off the top of my head which you couldn't judge early on(for the right reasons), Spore, because it literally does change through various completely different types of game throughout. Even then you could judge it because, it sucked early on and sucked later on :p The number of games in Spores category of literally completely different games throughout, well I can't think of another one off the top of my head.

Getting annoyed by PvP now, the spawning system is **** and serves no purpose and Inquisitors(And I'm guessing Consulars and they are the mirror) are ridiculously OP.

Lets start with my first point, the terrible spawning system. When you spawn there is a see-through door thing, it has a circle and sections of it light up, when it has gone through all of the sections light up you may leave the spawn, however this means you may be left waiting for a good amount of time. Now usually this is done to punish the winning team and give the losing team the advantage, but not in Swtor. We were 4-0 down in Huttball with the ball carrier running towards our line and yet it stopped me and 3 others from leaving the spawning room to stop the person...Terrible system.

Next, about the Inquisitor. It does insane damage, difficult to kill, more than one long stun and they seem to be on a very short cooldown, and they have that massive knockback. In a game like Huttball all that happens is the Inquisitor gets the ball, stuns a ton of people and then launches everybody off the platforms and breezes through to the line.

And there are thousands of idiots who have no idea what they are doing, mainly on the Republic side which only makes the problem 10 times worse.. Not going to play any more of the beta as the PvP is irritating me now and can't be bothered to do PvE so I'll just wait 'til launch.

I agree companions are great but rubbish at same time as they are all the same, also seems to be lack customisability and different clothes/weapons and stuff.
But maybe just because we are all noobs? And my pet keeps telling me, he will eat me at some point? So maybe starter companion won't stay with you for long?

Also anyone got a list of what you can get training in, so far I've only got training in crew skills and sith inquisitor. Must be other trainers about for weapons, amour, crafting and stuff. Is there crafting?

Seems good enough to keep the pre-order, especially with lack of other games. Not sure how much more ill play now, seeing as you lose it all and I'll have to do it all again on release in a few weeks.

There are a few things you can change/add via the games .ini

users/username/AppData/Local/SWTOR/betatest/settings and open the client_settings.ini

Can change TextureAnisotropy from 2 to 16

Can add these lines under [renderer]

AntiAliasingLevel = 8 (change the 8 to whatever AA you want)
enableadvenvirolighting = true
DebugAdvEnviroLighting = true

I'm sure there will be more but i haven't came across them yet.

Yep, but I don't mind that, better than some games which never bring them back up and you have to force close.

Phew, I don't mind it either but my PC's been playing up a bit over the past couple of days and was starting to think something was up on my end with that.

Crew Skills is crafting - you have mission skills, gathering skills and crafting skills - can only learn 3 - if you go talk to all the trainers on the space station and open the codex you can ready about them and what goes well with what :)
