should i leave my job?

We seem to have a lot of Security Guard Wants To Leave His Job threads lately.

If I was a security guard, given 12 hours alone day after day with a laptop, I'd be working towards an open university degree so I'd have better job prospects when I wanted to leave

Good shout....As much as we all hope, good jobs dont really fall into out laps...You may need to put some effort and some of your hard earned 10K into getting that rewarding enjoyable career...

Good luck OP

If I were you I'd be playing with the idea of quitting before Christmas to have a nice relaxing time with family before going travelling for a number of months. You have enough money saved and living at home will provide a level of financial security.

Only word of caution is that being unemployed and unable to secure work can be just as depressing as doing a job you don't like!

Isn't working more than 48 hours per week illegal... unless you signed off on it.

You're presumably thinking of the Working Time Directive 1998 which does say not more than 48 hours per week averaged over a 17 week period but you can opt out and I suspect that has been done here.

movingtables: do you have any idea of what you'd like to do? Finding that you dislike a job may be valuable in itself but it's even better if it helps you work out what you might want to try. Do you have any particular skills or qualifications that would lend themselves to a career and give you a steer in any direction?

Well I have just wrote my letter of resignation with immidiate effect after my shift finish's at 7pm and put it on my managers desk. he will read it in the morning.

no more 15 ½ hour night shifts thank *BLEEP*.

Do you not have a notice period in your contract? Or are you taking holiday or something else to take it up to the relevant period? It may not matter but if you wanted a reference from this employer you're probably better to hand in your resignation in line with company procedures.

Tesco offer better pay and better hours. I would definitely look for a new job, although keep yours until you have something lined up.

I personally would not leave a job until i have something else lined up, but ultimately it's only you who can make the decision.
This.

You need to make sure you've got some kind of plan before you leave your current job.

But if you really can't wait that long and want to quit before finding another job then maybe do some volunteer work whilst you look for work elsewhere. That's what I'd do.

Its near Christmas, McDonalds are always hiring (not a joke I work there)

Seriously, 2 new people both Sat and Sun for at least a couple months, its ridiculous.

Apply? You've nothing to lose :)

as said I would imagine you have a contracted notice period unless you have been there less than 6 months?, quitting a job without another job or something to go onto is never a good idea though.

personally I Would find my next path onwards before leaving, you said you have loads of down time and that you can use your laptop so find something to move onto on there!

I'm confused, what have you done in the 25 days since you last asked about your situation and got quite a lot of advice? That advice included me giving you a company that you could apply for, who could currently be giving you a shed load of varied work, as they're certainly pecking my head enough.

oh so you will be used to not having to go to work? What you go to loose then? If you can cope with not having a job then go for it.

Claim benefit for a short while, stop getting your ego involved. search for a better job that sounds so crapp. 55 hours a week?

LOL....

He can't "claim benefit" if he has just quit his job.

The sensible option would have been to find another job before quitting. Now you are in the position of being unemployed and looking for a job (which makes it more difficult) and you will not get a good reference from your current employer if you don't intend on working your notice period.

If your becoming depressed in your current job and have money saved up to live on whilst looking for another then I'd personally leave and look for something else.

Do you have anything that interest you that you'd like to train for?

Your in an ideal situation where by you can afford to train in something you enjoy and take the time in looking for something else. Don't rush into anything and make sure it's what you want to do.

As others have already said though working the hours you do you can spend time looking for other jobs whilst at work and also have the time to attend interviews whilst still keeping your other job as well.

If you do leave though make sure it's on good terms, work your notice period (more money as well remember) and this way you'll make sure you get a good reference which will be needed when applying for your next job.

I've been working Security for 11 years at anything up to 75 hours a week. If you don't like your current position look for a better one. I wouldn't get out of bed for less than £7.50 PH and i wouldn't work more than the 12 hours a shift that i do now.

There's plenty of Security jobs out there, some are better than others. Mine is Mon-Fri, days only, 60 hours a week and the position is a doddle. Go find something similar.

Why the heck do security people work like 50-70 hours a week for next to nothing, are you people thick or what?

If you're in London there's plenty of high paid security jobs you could probably do.
