Autism, Aspergers, Dyspraxia etc

I have been statemented with Aspergers, although it doesn't really affect my day to day life anymore, apart from a stupid tendency to spend ridiculous money on things I want rather than need. And mostly that is money I can't afford to spend :).

It doesn't affect my social life anymore, thank god, Used to be a right social defect till 6th form, and now I make friends almost as soon as I meet people :)

Well the Dyspaxia is something that I was diagnosed when I was a kid, and a few decades later, I'm finally looking for help for it. Think it might have affected my career in IT.

Not the Technical side, but the soft skills...

Also tbh this is kinda of meant as a serious thread, not a jokey one about giants...

be happy you have the official stamp as many people (my self included) havent been given it as back in the 80's and early 90's depending on your education authroity is was easier for them to just say your slow/lazy.

problem with any of them it can effect everyone so differently, dyspraxia for example can butcher your math skills, but many top mathamaticians have it and go the oposite way.

all i can suggest is try as many career paths as you have a chance to and you will hopefully find something that clicks, sure somethings wont be easy or just wont work. but that doesnt mean you cant do others.

well what is a serious business is having a disability.

I know people whose kids have to go several miles to a different school by taxis since there local school can not handle them.

Also being told that your disability is so bad that your never going to work, not really a joking matter tbh...Well if you think it funny continue with the funny posts..

well to be fair u wanting to try a serious thread in GD is askin a bit much! :D
P.s I have mild aspergers doesn't effect me now but I do like to be om my PC a lot

As a general set of guidelines you can use something along the lines of:

1. Cba to talk to anyone - autism
2. No-one likes you - aspergers
3. Clumsy git - dyspraxia.

Therefore if you are clumsy, no-one likes you or you cba to talk to anyone, then computers or science is the idea field :p

AMIRITE?

I must be autistic then!

I've always wondered if I had anything like this, I don't do well with people and get all nervous when in groups... I'm quite ltierally only comfortable when im at my computer in my big comfy chair :o

+1

I am all three of those and I am going into engineering :p. What is with the self diagnosis OP, go and see a doctor.

That's not Aspergers, we're all like that!

Is this a self-diagnosis I see before me?

TBH I really dont consider 'mental disorders' to classify as genuine 'medical disorders'. I am not actually autistic, it was a joke.

However I studied neurological / behavioural disorders at uni, and from two text books I managed to conclude from knowing my own symptoms better than anyone else that I am bipolar.

I couldnt ever be bothered wasting my time discussing that or anything similar with doctors because I would only find it to be a waste of time and it doesnt affect my life (I have vastly superior willpower compared to average homosapien).

Am I the only one who, reading through the thread title, was a bit puzzled that dyspraxia was the third item in that list?

Yes wtf does Dyspraxia have to do with Autism or Aspergers?

Dyspraxia is just being clumsy (read as "poor coordination")

As an aside; my gf's mum has dyspraxia and I can safely say that nobody with dyspraxia should be allowed near a car let alone allowed to drive one :(

It's a shame its such an easy target for ridicule - society doesnt tolerate large scale ridicule of other conditions (infact its often considered a social taboo as many comedians discover) - but its hardly suprising given the overwhelming amount of people who pretend to suffer in order to use it as a crutch for the fact they are just plain old fashioned weird. Much the same as dyslexia I'd imagine, probably 1 in 10 of those who claim to have it on the internet actually do.

It also offers many a useful excuse for all the ridiculous things they can't be bothered to stop doing in life. The guy in this thread was classic - 'Yea I spend more money than I have, never mind, I have aspergers!'. It doesn't turn you into a gibbering fool devoid of rational thought.

I learnt this when I tried to make a joke about MRSA once.

Friend talking about her NHS operation

Me - Make sure you dont end up getting MRSA from that

Friend - *RRRAAAAAGGGGGEEEEEE* THAT IS NOT FUNNY

Whoops ... Well, I hope you dont catch HIV from any blood transfusions ....

Oh no I didnt :D

I don't think the disorders are the focus of the ridicule, rather the people - especially internet goons - who pretend to have Aspergers to explain their crippling lack of social skills and 'uniqueness'.

And, having read your post again, I think that's exactly what you're saying :o

i got diagnosed with autism at 30 after going to the doctors thinking i had aspergers syndrome.

still waiting for the actual report for it though :( had my assessment done way back in i believe it was july, its already been nearly 2 years since my first GP trip about it aswell
1. Cba to talk to anyone - autism
its more like i dont have any desire to talk to anyone , i dont need to talk to anyone.

my barbers try really hard he probably thinks im a right ignorant **** , im tempted to just tell him im autistic and i would rather be quiet and just sit here than be forced into a conversation i dont care for.

btw, a lot of people are saying its not importaint to be diagnosed , it doesnt mattter etc but i want my kids to clearly know the families medical history.

my dads probably mild autistic and maybe thats where i get it from, hoping my child is normal but he seems to be so far (hes 7)

Thats why I cant be bothered!

It took me 7 years to get my hearing loss / balance screw up diagnosed, and 4 seperate NHS hospitals!

They are so blooming terrible at diagnosing things that arent obvious such as colds, flus, or lumps in CT scans!
