BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT engineer I had offered to run a 20mtr extension & master socket upstairs, or in the attic if I wanted free.

In the end decided to keep to present location, & just have a new face plate.

The speed figures BT quoted are rather conservative, quoted 28/6, had the BT engineer back due to modem dying after 2 weeks, he ran his tests & was getting a constant 37/10 after the 10 days settling down period.

Paying £28 per month but due to go up as of December to £29.40 I paid my line rental for the year in a one off payment £120.00
This is for Unlimited / unlimited calls

Am going to have to check then as I'm not sure how they've come to £44/mnth in which case as £29 plus the tenner a month rental would still not equal the amount quoted :/

Bloody sales person sold it to my dad and he's just gone with whatever they suggested lol without really knowing fully what's included - other than it's the unlimited package.

Saying that the unlimited calls surely costs extra doesn't it - or is that included in the £29?

Calls are included in the soon to be £29.40 (last bill £28.00) you sure they have not added something like BT Vision in as well ? Or some other small package maybe.
BTW watch out (or tell your dad to) for silly things like using 1471 to see if anyone called, they charge for this service as well as ring back etc etc ;)

It depends on how you pay line rental.

If you pay a year in advance its £10/mo but with monthly direct debit its ~£14.50/mo.

So with the latter figure £44/mo is correct.

Unlimited Infinity is £25.60/mo and if you include anytime calls it is £29.40/mo.

edit:

you can do the year in advance payment anytime you want, so don't worry about being committed to the higher line rental.

dont do wifi mate, hopefully they will run a wire up.

If you look out the easiest route for the cable up to the 'office' ;) beforehand and make sure it's clear for them on the day I very much doubt they'll have any problems running it for you.

The guy who put mine in (was a fresh line so no existing cabling to consider) offered to put it "wherever the computer's going to be," and was happy to put it wherever I wanted :)

Oh thats great news mate, feeling better now about it then. The office is just above where the socket is, pretty close to it really. So he shouldnt mind, ill let you all know how it goes for me, and what speeds i get. :)

Got a letter this morning about modem replacement, does anyone happen to have the kellycommunactions number so I can allow it through my call blocker?

Seems kinda stupid that I now have to wait around for a phone call, instead of me just ringing up to book an appointment..

Before:

This is using wireless from the BT homehub. The ping could possibly be a little lower but still, pretty damn happy with it!

I also have high pings (20+) it seems to be due to the 21cn network we're using, people on the "old" network report much, much smaller numbers (10+ms)

Not worth if it if you're going to upgrade to the 80/20 product.

Just had the install and it doesn't seem worth it for the 40/10 product either. HH3 gives me 38/8.5 and the trustly old WRT54GL just 27/8.2. New router time I think.

Any thoughts between the Asus RT-N16, Linksys E3200 or E4200 running TomatoUSB (since DD-WRT seems to have stagnated a little) or the Asus RT-N56U with little hope of a 3rd party firmware being a Ralink device.

I personally use a Routerboard 750G, it's pretty awesome but clearly not "plug and play". Allows me to use my (still running!) Be connection at the same time, and also have my Wifi AP on a stronger firewall ruleset than the LAN one..

Replacement modem appointment booked for tomorrow morning! :D

edit: Now replaced, no change in max downstream sync but gain just over 1 mbit max upstream sync.
