BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Have a feeling I was on a 2 year Talk Talk contract, probably have to buy myself out of as I have a year to run.

The lure of 40/10 Mbps then 80/20 Mbps is too hard to resist, showing as Dec 31st 2011 on the Infinity website.

I take it you can supply/use your own router with Infinity?
I'm guessing BT will supply one - however I'd rather do my research and buy one that totally meets my needs etc.

Yes you can, after BT leave unplug their router and use yours. There is a Draytek (search back in this thread/BT Forums) which is being used by a few people.

Second month in a row my bill has been incorrect :) This time they charged me £30 for cancellation ? Quick phone call and it's been refunded instantly :D Honestly it does pay to check everything.

Just thought I'd try a speedtest on wireless:

Router is upstairs in my bedroom and I'm currently in the garden, so pretty "far" in terms of where I usually use the laptop. Can't say I'm not happy with those speeds to be honest.

I want to move my router upstairs to a better position so is it a matter of running a length of cat5e from the master socket to the router?

Is there any downside to taking the router away from the master socket? I shouldn't think there would be but just want to check.

Also, do you still need micro filters on the phone sockets? I have removed mine since the master socket is split/filtered.

Would be cheaper to just upgrade your TalkTalk package with the "Fibre" bolt-on. That way you can benefit from FTTC but still honour your contract :)

Would an old Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT cause any limitations with Infinity? BT are estimating 33/10 for my line so I'd like to make the most of it if I can and have seen some people online saying they have lower speeds. Wireless speeds don't really bother me as it is only the rest of the family on wifi using nothing more taxing than facebook.

If you believe smallnetbuilder you should be okay, you can read about it here.

In the article they're actually using the WRT54GL as a comparison for the WRT54G V5, but all the necessary information is in there.

Engineer just left after changing the modem.
He said BT are changing them because of the 100 meg that's coming.
He reckons around March/April for the updated speeds.
EDIT: He also said that it should be free for current customers.

So the latest with BT, i spent over an hour with a very nice female billing representative who asurd me that incorrect billed items were removed from my account. I just received a 7 day suspension notice (back dated) due to the unpaid £215 bill.

Well done BT.

What's the current amount people are paying monthly on Infinity - as we're being quoted £44/mnth for the unlimited option on 18 month contract with line rental and unlimited calls ... seems a lot but if it's the norm then nothing to worry about!
