****The Nintendo 3DS Thread****

Got my Zelda 3DS bundle yesterday, gonna start playing it in next hour, any tips for a new player of OoT?, also can't believe the price of classic VC games on eShop, hate to think how much GBA games will be

The main thing that threw me when playing OoT for the first time was that at some points you have to play a song to someone specific and you have to target them first - it's not enough to just be standing near them. Otherwise it's pretty straight forward.

So, g/f suggested that I might get her a DS for Christmas, she doesnt know much about them tbh, but wants to play some pokemon / mario / sonic games etc.

I mentioned the 3DS and her reaction was "Euuugh dont they make people feel sick / give them headaches, I get travel sick enough as it is"

Is that a fair point?

Also, if the 3DS is out of the question, vanilla DS or DSI, worth the extra dosh for the DSI?

Out of touch with handhelds, is the DS likely to be replaced by an all new awesome machine any time soon?

Thanks in advance!

Just get her a 3DS and tell her not to be an ungreatful ***** if she moans :)

Ahhh, so its all backwards compatible etc, I really havnt thought this through like I should have!

Thanks though!

It'll play normal DS carts, DSi Carts, and 3DS Carts, unfortunately not older GB/GBA carts, but you can only backtrack so much!. The 3D is controlled by a little physical slider on the side of the screen; if she can't stand it - turn it off :)

I found it was uncomfortable the first couple of times of playing after a while but my eyes got used to it, and I ended up playing the entirety of Zelda in 3D.

Some games make better use of it than others, and on the plus side, in a lot of 3DS games if you don't like it, and switch it off, you get a bit of AA.

Yeah the GB/GBA thing isnt an issue really, I just read something about the screen size thing when playing DS games, that it stretches it causing bluring or something. Big deal? What are peoples opinions on here?

Neat function that you can turn the 3D on and off, can't grumble about that at all, thanks for the info.

Might as well be the 3DS then, but any advice on the DS game thing as above appreciated.

To be honest I had no issues with it. It's simply a case the 3DS screens have more pixels on so it zooms the picture, so it doesn't look quite as sharp (you can actually run it 1:1 but it looks TINY on the screen). It'd be nice if they added some filtering, AA, smoothing or what not, but I don't think it's a major issue, it's not like the original DS ever looked that good anyway, so making it slightly more blocky/blurry isn't going to massively change the aesthetic.
It certainly hasn't made anything unplayable even if it didn't look a sharp as when they were on the DS; I haven't played one of the newer DS's but the screen on the 3DS is better than the earlier DS models too, so even with this slightly loss of sharpness/things looking more blocky, you've still got things like better colours etc.

Oh, small recommendation. If you other half will end up spending long stretches playing it (rather than half an hour here or there and then back onto the charger dock), I'd recommend looking at the extended batteries.

Personally, I find the machine more comfortable to hold with the thicker battery, the battery life doubles, and it only cost £30.

Many thanks Alex, you've been a massive help, will definately cosider the battery pack.

It has to be docked to charge? Not just slap the cable in and continue playing?
Again so out of touch with handholds, give me a PC question and im fine.

You can do that too, it does have a direct connection on the back (and the screen goes brighter when on the mains); the dock is just the usual way people tend to charge. The 3DS will last a few days on standby from a full battery too, so mine's not fully off too often.

With the official battery, you'll get about 3 hours unplugged, with the £30 Nyko battery you get about 6 hours; I think they were meant to have some 9 hour ones in larger packs coming too, but not felt the need to keep an eye on them :)
This is the one I got:
http://www.gamingzap.com/nyko-nintendo-3ds-battery-charge-base.html

The pictures make it look huge, but the battery only adds about 1/3 to the depth of the unit, and given the thin angularity of the base, I find it more comfortable to hold with this extra depth.

Edit: Looks like there's a new Mugen one out now since I bought, thats rated quite a bit higher than mine (feedback seems to suggest 3x battery rather than 2x). Not sure if that's actually correct in reality, but by spec it's quite a bit larger than the Nyko. That said it looks even larger than the Nyko, and doesn't come with a dock, the RRP is a bit insane too. The price on the site aboves not too bad though.

If you or your GF were considering Zelda OOT for the 3DS, it might also be worth noting theres the Zelda 3DS Special Edition pack out with a Zelda 3DS and the game for about £150, which isn't bad value actually.

I want Mario kart now!

I used to hold some time trial records on the DS version and was unbeaten online (I could do the trick to avoid blue shells and keep a permanent starting boost throughout the whole race through uninterrupted snaking) .

Hope there is more competition online this time round.
