Possible tornado in Heaton Moor (Gtr Manchester)

There was a couple of mini-Tornadoes in Poole when I was based there some years ago....

I don't think they are as uncommon as people might think.

The official definition of a tornado is "A rapidly rotating column of air, pendulant from a cloud and in contact with the ground"; this should provide an adequate definition for any event. However, media worldwide (well, across Europe at least) seem insistent on using the term "mini-tornado", when there's no such thing! It either is a tornado, or isn't a tornado.

I was refering to the comparative size and strength of a Tornado in the UK as compared to most peoples idea of what one is, based on the US and films such as Twister.

I was not stating that it was anything other than a comparative description hence the captilisation of the word Tornado and not the word mini. I could just as easily used the words weak-Tornado or The US term for a tornado of insignificant strength a Landspout....

So according to TORRO what happened in Manchester was not a Tornado per se, but a Landspout.......:p

That is all besides the fact that your criticism was pretty unnecessary and pointless....I hope it makes you feel all nice and superior...

Well, it was probably an eddy whirlwind on a LEWP, but hey ;)

Wrt strength of UK tornadoes, we do get big ones every 5 years or so, comparable meso derived T8-T10 in strength. Birmingham 05, London 06 to name two.
