new rig..high leccy bill???

had my new rig built a couple months now and ive just got a big or should i say bigger leccy bill

the rig is [email protected] 8gb ram 580's in sli and a 1000w psu.

will this be a monster of a leccy eater???

maybe, what programs have you been running on the PC?

Buy a power meter to see the usage as well if you really want to know.

gaming on bf3 saints row 3 etc..yeah think ill grab one of them.

It will be mainly due to the Sli, check here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4012/nvidias-geforce-gtx-580-the-sli-update

So 620W on load, with a 85% PS you get 620/0.85 = 730W

what does the 85% ps mean?sorry still kind of new to this, still learning.

thanks for the link mate..

when im just browsing the tinterweb and things alike it will be a lot lower leccy consumption tho right???

Sorry, 85% efficiency. So if the power supply is supplying 620W then it's sucking 730W from the mains.

Yup, I'm not sure what the power consuption is at idle but it will be massively lower to something like 30W per card so 80-100W for the total system at a guess.

Yeah depending on how much of the time you were playing games while the PC was on it'll raise the bill.

yeah browsing the internet and simple tasks will use less but still more than the average PC due to powering 2 cards.

Like it's been said enable the power saving features if you can. Whenever I overclock I always make sure I can have the power saving features on.

The power meter will be great as then you can see exactly how much it uses and what settings and overclocks use the most or least.

ah right cheers mate...
Have you got power saving features enabled like speedstep?

i havent mate ill look in to it...

yeah ive been playing a a lot...
yeah my 2600k clocks down to 1600mhz when not much it happening...

the 580s can use up to ~850W while under full stress, so if your gaming your PC could theoretically be pulling this much electricity from the plug:

however, it almost certainly wont be pulling 850W much of the time. on average its more likely to be ~650W while gaming.
it should be far far lower than that while just browsing the internet and stuff (wouldnt be surprised if its ~150W or less)

if you really want me to i'll see if i can post up something that will tell you exactly how much it will cost to run your computer

*edit*
woah, that picture really fails on these forums. let me see if i can fix that

ah so you have some speed step measures set on then that's good.

I've found a review and a user power meter result showing the wattage

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1476/13/

http://www.overclock.net/t/1049493/measured-my-gtx-580-sli-power-draw-numbers-fyi

It's around 500-600W so that's pretty high, in just under 2 hours you'd use 1 unit of your electricity if running a game or stressing the PC.

no problems, if it's much of a jump try seeing if you can switch to a better tariff to save money.

I was on a tariff with EON that was good if you used less electricity, but if you started using more than a certain amount it was cheaper to switch to a different tariff which would cost less for the same amount of electricity (and gas) compared to my previous one.

I suppose the tariffs are confusing though so I don't blame you if you don't want to try :)
