Hey,

My Rig is currently
E6850 @3.8Ghz
OCZ 4GB Ram (800)
Crucial M4 64GB
8800GT
PSU - Corsair 750w Tx V.2

Just getting back into gaming and thinking shall i SLI my 8800GT as i can pick up a cheap one off the bay for a few quid or pick up a 550GTX, which seems to be well priced. Haven't got the biggest budget at the moment.

So my question would be how much difference would there be in performance between 2x 8800GT's and a 550 GTX.

Is it going to be massive? or will i get reasonable performance out of an sli setup. My mobo is already sli capable, so could be a pretty cheap upgrade for the performance benefit. Maybe £20 vs. £110...

What are peoples views?

Seeing as you don't have a big budget have you considered looking for a 2nd hand graphics card on that famous online auction site? I would recommend asking in the Members Market but I see you're new here so don't meet the requirements yet to gain access there.

As for 8800GT SLI vs GTX550 I'd go for the GTX550 to be honest, newer tech, single card solution etc, I'm not too sure about the performance between them but you'd get a nice boost coming from 8800GT to GTX550, infact I'm pretty sure it'd perform better than 8800GT SLI but perhaps someone else can shed some light on that :P.

If you do consider looking at 2nd hand cards you could check for a GTX285/GTX460 or maybe an ATI 5870 as I'm sure they can be had for a great price nowadays second hand.

p.s. welcome to the forums :)

Thanks. :)

I was going to pick up a second hand 8800GT from that well known site...

Looking towards the future might just be best to pick up a 550GTX and then in a year if i feel i need some extra juice, get another. If that was the case in a years time i hope i would have taken the plunge for the intel Sandbridge-E or whatever will be new out around then.

Would just be really interested in how much extra performance i could get by picking up another and going sli all for 20quid ish.

I'm running a couple of band aid 8800gts's in SLI, they work great on most modern games when you kick the res down to 1600x900 you can even keep a few settings on high.

The only game I'm playing atm that doesnt like them in sli is batman AC, but it runs fine with one card and the other dedicated to phyiscs.

I'm still kinda shocked at how well they do, considering, but i'll be so glad to upgrade in the near future.. but yeah 8800 sli works fine for me with cunning settings :D

From what shadesoggrey said, it may be a worthwhile idea, if it only is an extra £20, then upgrade fully, when you have enough money.

Though if you can pick up a 5850 or GTX285 for a little more i would stongly recomend goin for one of them. The 285's are huge cards though. If you can get a GTX 460 that'd be perfect.

I have a GTS 450 and that works fine on Skyrim.

I wouldn't bother going for a GTX 550, pretty sure they're worse in performance than a GTX 460.

For £100 go for an AMD 6850 1GB, assuming they're still on deal for about £99. They're about on par with a GTX 460 1GB as far as I can remember.

Otherwise go for something 2nd hand.
