Xbox Kinnect vs Wii Fit vs any others

Kinect + Your Shape (1 or 2) is the best video game/fitness combination I've personally had, and way better than anything on Wii.

It's a great way to compliment exercise, but not totally replace it.

If your going to buy something for this purpose then technology wise Kinect is the one to go for. However, it does require more room than the Wii so you may have to take that into consideration.

I would echo others in saying it wont replace more traditional exercise activities but has to be better than nothing.

Most of these things are traditional exercise at their best, pressups, squats, jumps etc etc, you don't get much more traditional.

How, in any way is it not exercise?

I have EA Active and tbh I think it's a complete waste of time. Jogging on the spot in front of the tv just doesn't cut it for me. So I walk the dog daily for my legs and use The Fight for my upper body workout.

I do a manual job, which involves being on my feet all day so a hard workout on my legs isn't neccessary. Where as the The Fight is by far the best upper body workout I've tried (As close to going to a boxing gym again but without the contact).

In fairness I've never tried Kinect but from what I have experienced from Wii fit and EA etc they really are designed for women who want a tame workout.

I thought EA Fitness Evolved (1st one) is pretty good. Although last time i used it the trainer kept saying i wasn't squatting right. I certainly WAS, i was in time and everything, and it got me so mad that i tried punching her and swearing at her (made me feel better at the time). In frustration i turned it off and haven't gone back to it since. BUT i definitely think there is a place for these exercise programs.
I'll have another crack at it. Might get the latest one, maybe the tracking is a little better now.

I didn't say that

I meant there is a limit to what you can physically do in the average bedroom/living room, and the games don't cover every type of activity.

It's the same as an exercise DVD. It's a part of a healthy lifestyle, not a full answer to getting fit.

Neither did I Nismo, but these console fitness guys get uppity if you ask them to get some fresh air

I wish I could go and get all my exercise outside. However I have to work, and I live north of Edinburgh and have no taste for walking or cycling in the dark. Sunrise today was at 08:17 and sunset will be at 15:42. It is also p*ss*ng with rain, and today's heavy cloud means it's gloomy for some time after sunrise, and some time before sunset.

the games don't cover every type of activity.

Neither does a brisk walk, going to the gym, playing a game of football, climbing a hill or going dinghy racing, and for the record I have no interest in traditional gaming.

However - the discussion has been useful and I will probably flex my flexible friend on Friday.

You expressly implied it with you comments.

I never said it was the full answer either... All exercise has it's limitations, picking on these sort of programs is pointless, might as well say the same about a treadmill, normal running, swimming, circuit training etc etc, it's pointless.

Pffft... no, I get uppity when some fitness snob comes along as tells me that exercise isn't exercise because it uses a games console, does the same hold true for the static bikes, rowers and treadmills at the gym that you can race other people on?

Any thoughts from anyone out there? Is there anything else I should be considering? And for anyone that has used this, any suggestions as to the best games for this? By best I'm not concerned about measuring and statistics, but how well they work and how well they flow. Want to be able to set up a 20-minute session and not have to fiddle with the menus while it runs and I puff.

In short, get the Kinnect

Nowhere have I said its not exercise, moreso that it wont replace traditional structured exercise.

Think youve read far more into the posts than intended and youve come over overly defensive for very little reason - quite bizarre ...

Im sure this may sound harsh but dont waste your time with fitness games, just get down to the gym or play some sport. People kid themselves that these fitness games can really replace proper structured exercise...

Sorry, but that sure reads like you're saying they are not proper structered exercise... maybe you should have been clearer?

So? I didnt say it wasnt exercise, or if I have to be clearer nonstructured exercise - not sure what value you think you are adding to the discussion by needlessly nitpicking...

Im not the first person thats questioned your inferences...

The only strucutre an erxercise regime needs is:
1. make it safe so as not to injure yourself
2. Burn off some calories

Other than that you can do just about anything you like to raise your heart rate and/or put stress on your muscle, depending on what you want to achieve. Still doesn't have to be structured though.

Again, no I didn't.

Maybe I should have typed "compliment other exercise", but I still meant the same thing regardless, you've just jumped on one small point and made a deal out of it for some reason.

Using the Kinect is exercise, and no doubt it helped me lose some weight, but I would still use it alongside other methods and not exclusively.

Sorry, but your post read that way to me, apologies if that's not how you meant it.

Because that small point made the world of difference to how your comment read to me, again, apologies if I got it wrong, I seem to have had a bad day yesterday :)
