I'm trying to get me mate over the road on the road as cheap as poss.
Which Insurance companies should I try for the cheapest to insure a First time driver, I've tried the normal compare etc sites but think it could be cheaper.
Cheers in advance for any help. :)

Ring as many as you can, and purchase the cheapset quote you find. /end thread.

Seriously, there is no single insurance company that is cheapest unfortunatley.

I've tried that thepeteh but thought some Young drivers on here may know a company that specialises in Young drivers making it cheaper.

Also car comparison websites tend to be useless for a first time driver. By enquiring directly to a company I was able to get a quote cheaper by a few hundred than anything I could get on a comparison website.

You are right mate as every single comparison site we've tried just slings up the same top ten quotes & they are all from big name brands.

Elephant don't seem to be too bad for me however Adrian Flux have always managed to come out with something lower as they use underwriters I've never even heard of. Get the best quote you can and then give them a ring to see if they can beat it.

Admiral creamed the competition for me. 24 y/o though, but just passed.

Cheapest we could find was Tesco Direct, There may be cheaper out there but the lad is chomping at the bit to get mobile, Sorting it now then taking him to pick his motor up.

Adrian Flux was the cheapest for me when I passed. I was 19 and driving a Rover 214 and the insurance was... wait for it.... £2200. I paid because I didn't want to front the insurance with my parents in case I did get into an accident. Better safe than sorry.

However I did get a quote at the same age for £900 but it was on a 2CV and on a Coverbox policy so had to have a milage tracker in the car.

flux - banger - tpft = job done

Not always the case. Sometimes tpft is more expensive than fully comp and bangers dont always mean cheaper insurance. Unless by banger you mean an older car like something from the 80s or early 90s. For me to get insurance this year with 1 years NCB and 1.5 years driving experience at 21 on my old Rover 214 would be £1200, but it's only £650 on my 1988 Colt. Huge difference.

However another surprising thing is an old Civic EF sedan was about £400 more to insure than the Rover, whilst a Volvo 440 Turbo was about £300 cheaper to insure than the Rover.

I'd try getting quotes with a large array of cars. Old and new, big and small. You may become surprised with the quotes you get with certain cars!

Nobody could beat Tesco direct I even tried to Blag Adrian Flux & they couldn't even match it.

Co-operative were not bad when getting quotes. Also try going to aviva directly. Cheapest I got on comparison site was £1k with RAC, I read up on it and turns out they went through aviva so went to aviva and went down to £800 on the site, they rang me later that day saying they will beat the quote and then it dropped down to £650.
