Hi, I'm after a new monitor and I've narrowed it down to these two, but I really can't decide which one to buy! I currently have a 20" samsung at 1680 x 1050, and I use it for watching TV and blu rays, aswell as gaming and and general browsing / Uni work. I wanted to upgrade for more desk space aswell as the 1920x resolution, and I like the idea of an IPS panel. I'm thinking the 23" 16:9 would be better for gaming and watching TV / blu rays as everything seems to be going towards 1080 16:9 now, but the 24 would offer more desk space. The difference in width of the panels is under 1cm, but do you think I should not worry about loosing the 10% vertical space, save the money and go for the 23"? I couldnt help but think that the 23" isnt as much of an upgrade to my screen in size as I'd like, but 16:10 seems to be dieing. Thanks!

16:10 for normal consumers is already a dead path. The only monitors that still come out with are aimed at the (semi-)professional market.

I guess it call comes down to how much time you spend on uni work if it's worth it or not.

Hi Jack,

Sorry for a bit of a thread hijack! I am looking at getting a new screen and had also made my mind up on an U2312HM. But then I got reading about this 120hz stuff and people saying as I play games more than anything else I should consider it. As a gamer and someone who also likes the U2312HM I would be interested to hear if you had considered 120Hz and what made you stick with the U2312HM? I guess I am looking for some reassurance that the U2312HM will fit my needs! I don't really know if 120HZ will make a difference to me because I dont really have the games running much over 60fps anyway :s

Would be interested in your views. Sorry I hope I dont confuse you more :D

Hi there, can't say i've considered 120Hz monitors nor do i know much about them, although im sure theres plenty of people who can tell you on here! I wanted a Dell ultrasharp monitor for their IPS panel, build quality and good warranty. Obviously the IPS panels are known for better colour reproduction and viewing angles which is something that appeals to me. Although they can be known for greater input lag compared to TN panels, the U2312HM seems to do very well in particular compared to others: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm

I think I must have commitment issues :\

Still havnt decided by this and the 24inch, pretty much because I'm put off by the lack of hdmi and the choice between the 23 and 24 is so close.

What would you want HDMI for other than connecting non-PC devices? All of which operate or scale optimally at/to the 1080p resolution native to the U2312HM. If you want to use such devices, choice made. ;)

Well yeah, that being the problem.

I would use my xbox 360 from time to time(obviously having to use a hdmi->dvi dongle and switching it out) a bit of a pain, but I do enjoy fifa/forza.

However I do quite a lot of web browsing / tv watching(/football streamwatching) / uni work so the extra inch would be nice, just a question as to which I value more.

Yes I understand the predicament. The extra inch also 'feels' like more due to the difference in aspect ratio with the U2312HM feeling relatively squat. I am used to much larger monitors though so it may just be me. :p

When you compare the two though, the 24" dosent really offer anything over the the 23" for watching TV / films, as the extra 9mm width of the 24 panel is pretty negligible, and the extra vertical space of the 24 will be occupied by black lines due to it being 16:10. This is what i kept telling myself to convince me the 23" would be fine :P

Since the Dell doesn't have any sort of scaler it would actually fill the entire screen. So if it's just viewing space you do get 'extra'. There are certain films where you would get a black border even on a 16:9 monitor - this would still be present but the image itself would still occupy more space. It would be 'stretched' vertically which is the problem I was referring to earlier regarding using it for games consoles.

I currently have a 16:10 monitor and watching TV on my PC does not fill the entire screen. The software (WMC in my case) allows you to change how you want the picture to be displayed, so while watching TV I get black borders as it is broadcasted in 16:9, you dont have to watch it in a scretched format. So while watching =>16:9 all your gaining with the 24" is the extra horizontal panel size of 9mm. Consoles of course would be a different case.

Just recieved my 2312m Very Impressed! Does anybody have any advice for settings / calibration / configuration to get the best out of it? Cheers

As stressed in the calibration section of this review each individual unit is slightly different. The U2312HM actually gives pretty decent performance out of the box but you may wish to adjust the colour channels - in particular this model tends to show a strong green bias so this would be the first thing to tone down. You could also have a shot with TFT Central's ICC profiles (make sure to set it up as they did - see the table) here. Again inter-unit variation means that this may not be ideal. Depending on your uses and the degree of colour accuracy you require you will probably be able to get away with just tweaking the colour channels a little. Gamma and contrast settings at default are quite good on this model really and if you don't have a colorimeter it is best to leave them alone. :)

No issues at all, I'm happy to say.

My old Viewsonic VP930 was a bugger for it. A big X - all corners.
Still loved it though.

This has none whatsoever.
