Hi,

I am in the process of building a new PC and after searching around for the ideal motherboard, CPU, Graphics card etc. I have pretty much given up as I don't have much knowledge with PC's.

I currently have an old machine I built few years ago and i was thinking of salvaging some of the parts to use on the new build.

The current specs are:

Asus M3N78-VM motherboard
AMD Phenom x4 9550
Coolmaster CPU cooler
GeForce 8600GT
8GB OCZ DDR2 Ram
750W PSU
1TB 7200rpm HD
24" 1080p Samsung LCD TV/Monitor

I've been looking into buying a new Motherboard, CPU, GPU, Ram (DDR3) and case and using the HDD, PSU and the cooler from the old machine.

I will mainly be using the PC for video editing, mathematical modelling software (Matlab, Maple), internet and the occasional gaming. I have been looking at the AMD x6 CPU's (phenom 1055t, 1090t, FX 6100) as they seem to be a better choice for video editing but I have been advised that the Intel’s i5 2500K is a better CPU for the task.

Some members on another forum suggested going for the i5 2500K, Asus P8Z68-V/GEN3 and the GTX 560ti. I am happy with the CPU as I can get hold of one for under £150 but the Motherboard and the video card seems a little expensive. Can you make alternative suggestions? Is there a decent mobo and GPU for under £100? I have a budget of ~ £500 or $800.

Appreciate your time and help

have a look at the MSI Z68A-G43-G3 motherboard and graphics card wise have a look at the ati 6850's for around the £100 mark (ocuk is under £100 at the moment).

Took the plunge today and bought the following:

Intel i5 - 2500K Processor (£160)

Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 Motherboard (£130) Was going to buy the Asus Sabertooth p67 V3 but they had £100 off the Gigabyte

Corsair CAFA70 Cooler (£30) & Arctic Silver 5 Thermal paste (£5)

Corsair CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 - 4 x 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram (£70)

Coolermaster SGC-2000-KKN1 Scout Mid Tower (£65)

AKASA AK-ALL-02BK All in one fan controller (£30)

I will be using the HD, PSU (750W), DVD Drives (and for the time being the old 8600GT) from the old machine.

Is there anything I should know before going ahead with the build?

Thanks

Hi, sorry just checked and yes both HD's are SATA. The guy at the store did warn me regarding the height of the vengeance but adviced i raise the heatsink fan if needed.

Currently building the machine and so far so good :)

Few problems encountered along the way. The CPU cooler has two fans but theres only one CPU fan header on the motherboard. Is there an alternative way going about it?

The second question is i bought an all in one control panel which has the mic and audio out, however the case also has this built in. Is there any way of connecting the two so i get them both to work?

I am not great with this sort of stuff :( any advice?

Did the cooler include in the box, some sort of cable to connect two fans into a single connector?

Pretty sure my set-up is similar in that I have 2 fans on CPU (I know this much as fact) and the GA-EX58-UD5 also only has 1 CPU fan header (I think). I just connected the other to a nearby SYS_FAN header and haven't had any troubles.

Thanks for the tip, exactly what i did. Any ideas on the two mic and audio port?

Theres only one header on the board for the audio, so you need to decide which location on the case is more convenient for plugging stuff into.
