As title.
Do/can they actually output proper 720p/1080p HD?

I was looking at the HD Component cables available and they only say 480p.
So what's the point of it?!

Sharper picture on HD televisions, which does of course accentuate how dated the graphics are.

Doesn;t this sum up the Wii in a nutshell?
It does today but then the fact that it is a 5 year old model which has outsold all its competitors suggests otherwise historically. The fact that Nintendo has managed to avoid releasing a replacement for all this time is quite amazing but it's definitely looking dated now compared to the competition, which of course now too have motion detection available.

Some of the best games this gen say no :P

It was just a flipant remark, nothing to provoke major discussions :)
That said, it's because they had their demographic right which was not necessarily "the gamer".

Also, all the current gen systems are roundabout the same age, the Wii however was dated when it came out (relative to the competition).

480p is the best resolution that the Wii can do using the component cable but it doesn't look that good on a big screen. It doesn't look anywhere near as good as the xbox 360 or PS3. Obviously I'm not talking about graphics, I'm talking about image quality/text sharpness etc. So the Wii homescreen will not be as sharp and clear as the Xbox 360 dashboard. Using the Wii on a big screen using composite/scart looks terrible.

If you have a decent screen (Not an LCD), it still looks great on a large screen (Mario Galaxy, Metroid etc look great on my Plasma).

I saw the Skyward Sword advert on TV for the first time yesterday, and have to admit it looked awful.

That's not the point of the game I know, and it's excellent, but surely it must have put some people off buying? Their loss I guess.

I believe it's actually compulsory to point out the bad graphics any time someone mentions the Wii online. That's why they give you 480p. So you can be even more aware of it.

I love my Xbox 360, and it's a far better console than the Wii, but nevertheless the Wii has had some spectacular games. Metroid Prime Trilogy is incredible, for example.

Even if it is standard def, those component cables will make the picture look much clearer than either scart or composite. Component is basically very very high quality analogue, basically capable of transmitting and HD signal if the source supports it and even if it didnt it will still look much sharper with richer colours than the other analogue alternatives.
