Fair play to the fella for having the ability to get people to take him seriously but somehow I can't see NASA clamouring at his door or the Chinese hacking his design secrets :D

Man thats gonna be a epic fireball if he makes a shuttle out of that stuff on re-entry. :D :D

That's a plane for 80000ft.
Also low earth orbit doesnt require hear shields does it. Spaceship one for example has no hear shield.
Fair play, can't see them succeeding though. But absolute quality.

Well I guess it's a start.

I just hope they stick to lower altitudes - wouldn't want to see all that enthusiasm wasted! :p

Who knows, it might contribute to something 10/20 years down the line.

Spaceship One cannot achieve orbit. Believe me, you need heatshields to re-enter from orbit.

80,000 feet sounds like a lot, but the Karman line which is recognised as the edge of space, is 100km or about 330,000 feet. So he still has a way to go. :p

Space ship one reaches 100km space without using heatsheilds for re-entry.
Secondly that picture, is a plane they want to reach 80000ft as a first step, to increase their knowledge and understanding. Which will then go on to build further craft, which will reach higher altitudes.

Granted I mean space rather than LEO

Yes, you can get to space without needing heatshields for re-entry, but you specifically said you don't need heatshield for re-entry from orbit. Well, you do.

Well technically you could get away without it if you had enough propellant to slow you down sufficiently before re-entry, but heatshields tend to be lighter than extra propellant.

This will probably sound stupid, but to not require a heatshield, couldn't the plane/spacecraft just come in at a less steep angle? Or would they be just reentering the atmosphere for weeks?
