Fukushima Enters China Syndrome

So does this mean there will be a load of old people living fine and dandy in the area that is meant to be bad for you?

yes. sort of. not fine and dandy though just being exposed to radiation every day at dangerous levels.

but that's not the main issue, apart from the dumping of the water used to cool the reactors back into the sea which has already been detected on the US coast, in the event of a melt down into the water table with a flash boil event the steam would blast out and then be in the atmosphere to spread where it wanted beyond japan.

to be clear this is potentially a lot worse than Chernobyl

Ok, so are we going to expect hundreds and thousands dead then because of the fallout?

It's also potentially scare mongering. There is no solid proof to back any of these claims up.

Its a discussion that is growing around other forum communities and the wider web, its as interesting to discuss the possibility as it is to see hard to come by proven evidence given the huge corporate and governmental control with regards to this event.

if you feel that way then yes, lets not continue the discussion.

please feel free to ignore.

wont it be better if governments build the plants in the middle of the desert and just make huge water channels to the plant? more harder and expensive I know, but it would avoid a scenario like Japan.

The scenario in Japan was a ridiculously unlikely event. The earthquake itself, despite being an order of magnitude bigger than they had designed for, didn't cause this problem. The problem was caused by the water washing away the diesel tanks for the backup generators.

The reactors are 40 odd years old and the new reactors being built around the world are mind numbingly safer. They all use passive techniques to cool and shut down the reactors in the event of an emergency which means even if everyone at the plant suddenly dropped dead disaster would be averted.

Despite decades of scaremongering and fear and tales of people growing extra limbs and eyes as a result of nuclear power, it is still, KW for KW the safest mass energy source man has ever developed. And that is with the OLD reactors doing all the work.

They vented a relatively small amount of radioactive gas which has spread over a huge area. Would bet if you held a gieger meter anywhere within that zone it wouldn't even register. It's the equivalent of farting in London and expecting everyone within the city to vomit from the smell.
