ALWAYS
WEAR
A
HELMET

That happened to me yesterday. Got 8 stitches holding that mess on my lower jaw together. I think the injuries would have been worse if I wasn't wearing the helmet.

As for the accident, a kid ran in front of me during my cycle to work. After that I have no memory until waking up in the ambulance.

That's nasty mate, a warning though, I have been shot down so many times on these forums at the mere mention of a helmet. Apparently its good for nothing or so the folks of OcUK say.

I think the evidence either way is inconclusive, but common sense suggests to me that it can't do much harm.

Whilst the cyclists versus motorists debate is as hilariously depressing as it is recurring here on GD, I don't think anyone has ever said this have they?

Ouch, that's got to sting a bit. Glad you're not more seriously hurt though. Was the kid ok as well?

As for the helmets debate, the harm from wearing one seems to me to be less likely than the potential harm from not wearing one. It's maybe not conclusive but if I was going to cycle in London I'd definitely be looking to wear one.

There's been a few threads pop up, usually the common opinion is too 'look cool' over safety.

Interesting, I've never seen that argument. Maybe my eyes glaze over when we get into the weekly cyclist/motorist 'debate'. Without wishing to derail too much, how can a helmet not be beneficial? (or is that itself a massive derail?)

I don't think the kid was hurt in the end. I'm really angry that he just ran out in front of me without looking. There weren't any cars on the road at the time so he probably didn't hear me coming.

I think it's because statistics show, though I've not seen an official report, seem to suggest that head injuries aren't as common as other injuries when Cycling.

I certainly thought it was cool not to wear one when I was a kid, but these days I don't ride without one. My cousin would probably be brain damaged or worse if he wasn't wearing one, I know I've hit my own head a couple of times when mountain biking, going over the bars. In the worse case scenario that can still happen on the road.

The most common cycling injuries are broken wrists, collarbones etc, plus the cuts & graises associated with coming down hard on tarmac.

A helmet obviously isn't going to help with any of these, but on the off-chance that you go down anywhere near a curb or similar and hit the relatively soft parts of your skull, then a helmet could well save your life, or at least keep you from rather more serious long-term injuries usually related to a good hard bonce-bashing.

A very good friend of mines dad only survived because of wearing a helmet, good enough reason for me to always wear one.
