45,000 evacuated in Germany - Unexploded 1.8 Ton WW2 British Bomb!

I would imagine a 70 year old bomb would be that powerful.

I guess nobody understands ballistic trajectories and what happens to the bomb casing when it explodes... A 10 grams of steel flying at a couple of thousand fps will go right through you at a mile.

Real life is not a computer game its not just the blast radius you have to worry about.

Frames per second??

:p

Anyone remember that Smirnoff advert where all the crap in the sea starts coming up onto the beaches around the world because its being filtered?

Imagine what that would be like with all the crap that's also under your feet from decades and centuries ago. There are LOADs of unexploded munitions all over Europe because we used to love poking Jhonny Foreigner with our massive stick and Jhonny Foreinger used to like poking back.

Kind of fascinating when you think about it. Something designed by a bloke with a pipe and a moustache and build by a a bunch of chaps in a shed 70 odd years ago has lain forgotten and un noticed for decades. Now its popped its head up and said hello, I was a bad bomb, I didn't go bang like a good bomb would have. Someone come and put me out of my misery.

And there are hundreds of them all over the UK (mostly London/greater London), France and Germany. All sitting there peacefully minding their own business. Until someone comes along and digs it up to build a new office building or a new tube line or just cultivating their farm.

Can you IMAGINE how much man made stuff there is hidden beneath our feet and in the oceans? Never mind the stuff we know about like the Titanic and the Montgommery. What about all the crap that history has forgotten was even there in the first place.

WW2 bombs of this size where and of course still would be incredibly powerful before the Nuclear bombs were detonated and we entered the nuclear age "conventional" munitions had already hit the point where an entire city could be destroyed in a few attacks.

For those interested in this sort of thing look up attacks on Dresden ,Hamburg and Tokyo.

"Night of 9-10 Mar, Operation Meetinghouse: 279 B-29 bombers dropped incendiary bombs and destroyed 267,000 buildings and homes or 41 square kilometers of Tokyo. Americans estimated 88,000 killed, 41,000 injured, and 1,000,000 displaced. Tokyo Fire Department estimated 97,000 killed and 125,000 wounded. Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department estimated 124,711 casualties and 286,358 destroyed buildings and homes."

Ok that was nearly 300 planes but i am sure you get the point.

For the anti nuclear lobby its worth noting that we could wipe out a city quite happily even without the "A" bomb.

Get out of here with your reason and logic and facts. Nuclear is bad and makes babies come out green with tentacles. Everyone KNOWs this.

About 8 years ago a WW2 bomb was found in the back garden of a neighbour about 30m away from my bedroom window, lots of police and a bomb disposal team.

We weren't evacuated though.

It's been defused, said they just wrenched the fuse out. I think they may of carefully removed it. But then again they must have known make and model and the risks. So perhaps they did just pull it out.

don't quote me on this but iirc the explosives in some ww2 bombs fuses/boosters are water soluble so it could be possible that while the main charge is very much intact the sensitive fuse/anti tamper devices may have long since been dispersed by the river.

Wouldn't mind seeing the eventual controlled explosion of the device!
