UK couple driven to suicide by poverty and neglect

awful. did the social workers who took their child away not flag the situation up to a level that would have been appropriate?

Ah yes, making a political point over the still warm bodies of the dead. The moral bankruptcy of the left summed up in one post.

Well played, gothic hobbit.

Following the meltdown of the global economy in 2008, David Cameron, before becoming prime minister, stated that Britain had now entered “the age of austerity”. In the aftermath of the crash, billions have been slashed in social spending, first by the previous Labour government and from May last year by the incoming Conservative/Liberal Democrat government.

dont you mean nice one conlabdems ;)

Why blame the current government? The rules that impacted this couple had nothing to do with them?

But then, I'd be interested in an unbiased source and account of the event rather than one from a socialist propaganda site.

Rather than get uppity about the source, how about showing some compassion regardless?

Perhaps, but for the nearly two years the current government have been in, they have been only too happy to continue with the previous government's benefit sanction regime.

But then, I'd be interested in an unbiased source and account of the event rather than one from a socialist propaganda site.

The first source was the first one I could find, so I added another source to be fair.

Even though, who's to say what is biased and what isn't...

Define compassion? Is it sad that they died? absolutely. Is their story being used to make an unjustified political point? Again, absolutely.

Wailing and gnashing teeth at the alleged failure of the system (which smacks of untruth as it is, because of little things like housing benefit and income support which the couple would also have been eligible for) won't actually fix the problem, nor will attacking the current or previous administration for little technicalities like expecting someone to actually have some vague evidence that they are ill...

I can't relate to you at all.

I apologise for being able to separate the issue from the appeal to emotion fallacy presented with it.

Benefits are not an appeal to motion. The whole subject could be considered that, tragic suicide.

Also, I've often wondered - "think of the children" fallacy for example, how can we ever discuss the future without inadvertently envoking it? Are these fallacies as absolute as implied?
