Clip from the news. Watch the perpetrator smirking as he walks free from court at the end.

Anyone wanna justify this and agree with the sentence?

A man who left a 96-year-old war veteran blind in one eye after attacking him on a packed tram has been given a three-year supervision order.

Stephen Gordon, 44, launched his unprovoked attack on Shah Chaudhry in Croydon, south London, in December.

Gordon, from Croydon, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm after the attack was caught on CCTV, Croydon Crown Court heard.

The British Transport Police said they were "disappointed" with the sentence.

Walking sticks

"The blow to the victim's head caused serious injury, which has resulted in the victim losing sight in one eye," said Det Sgt Darren Stenning.

"And unfortunately since this assault, the victim's health has deteriorated and he now resides in a care home."

The attack took place on a tram travelling between Sandilands and East Croydon on December 14 last year.

Gordon had tried to push past the victim, who was standing in the aisle leaning on his walking sticks.

As he squeezed under the pensioner's arms his hat was knocked off and he swore at the man and punched him in the face.

Police said two school children who were on the tram chased Gordon. They later gave evidence against him.

Hmmm. First offence? If so then I guess it is possibly justified as a valid sentence.

I'd still be a bit :S about the whole thing. I know we're going to see much more patriotic reactions because the guy is a WW2 Vet, but I think more of an issue is the fact that he is a pensioner. He should have just got off at the other end, or waiting for the Tram to stop, then the pensioner could have moved.

I have to agree though, his attitude as he walks free was absolutely disgusting.

You can't justify this, but would not matter what race colour or gender the perpetrator was they should have done time behind bars.

He's smirking as he walks free from court because he knows himself he should have done some time, or maybe he could not carealess.

Look at him walk out of court with a swagger. **** you. When you're 96 years old a punch like that must feel like the end of the world. And all he can do is laugh about it. Last time I checked (when it happened to me) Assault results in jail time. Disgusting.

Good to see all the other members of the public there helping an old man being whacked. I guess the attacker had a traumatic youth, and someone stole his bike when he was 8 and its pyschologically affected him and must be taken into account for his behaviour and we should be lenient because of it :)

Utter disrespect, no matter what race they were.

Who in there right mind would hit an OAP? I know I wouldn't (And I'm white, not that it matters, but it may be relevant given the title of the topic).

Yep although just one punch, when it is a young strong man punching a frail elderly man, it could easily be enough to kill or cause very serious harm. It sounds like the poor man has not recovered from his ordeal and probably never will due to his advanced years.

The guy deserves a good battering, however Im not sure its just because hes black.

If we sent every violent thug for thought realignment education, the thought realignment department would be snowed under with work. So we'll just stick to the white racists.

Whats equally surprising is that it was 2 children who tracked him down.

I Would like to think that if that happened on a Tram I was travelling on, I wouldnt leave it down to children to get justice.
