No because the Ibiza Cupra actually has some performance.

The Veloster is only being offered with 1.6 138BHP engine. The base-spec Scirocco may be more expensive but its 1.4 122BHP is actually faster because the car weighs 1250kg vs a staggering 1700kg of the Veloster (or not). I liked the Veloster, but if they don't offer it with a decent engine it's out of the question for me. There's a turbo version in the works, but Hyundai don't seem to have it on their site yet...

You realise that you're quoting the kerb weight of the Scirocco and the gross vehicle weight of the Veloster there, right? Compare kerb weight and GVW for the pair and they actually weigh about the same.

edit:

Veloster 1.6 manual, kerb weight is 1236kg, GVW is 1700kg. Scirocco 1.4 122PS, kerb weight is 1319kg, GVW is 1690kg. Sources for those figures would be the respective manufacturers websites - Hyundai and VW. And while we're at it - performance is nigh-on identical, CO2 emissions broadly similar, fuel consumption figures also similar.

Oops, my bad. I'm even more worried by the performance of the engine now though...

Edit: The more I look at it the weirder it gets. I saw figures of 9.7s 0-62 for the Veloster, I'm now seeing tests of between 8.5 and 10.2 which is bit wild. Hyundai don't have official times but I was comparing 9.7s and 9.3, which is broadly speaking the same; but if it's closer to 8.5 then it's faster.

Still, it's fairly unimpressive for a "sports coupe" nonetheless.

I'm going by the times that they quote on their respective websites. For the manual gearbox, Hyundai quote 9.7sec for the 0-62mph dash. VW quote the Scirocco as doing that in....*drumroll*....9.7sec. Top speed, the Hyundai is quoted as reaching 125mph, VW claim 124mph for their car.

Either way, at least it's not the only engine the VW offer that car with...

It generates 208 hp at 6,000 rpm with 195 ft-lbs of torque from 1,600-5,000 rpm and will be available from the end of 2012 onwards.

Yep, I saw that when I was looking around for the date for my last post. That basically puts it on equal with the Scirocco GT 2.0 TSI; albeit a latecomer to the party.

The interesting thing will be to see how much more the turbo version costs, with the Roc GT petrol being £24.7k currently.

Of course, but the base spec roc is in roughly the same price range (£19k) and you at least have the option of spending more. I know that if I was spending such a large amount, I'd stump up the extra for a decent engine. I mean, if you look at any review of the Veloster their main flaw is "underpowered", with the word "gutless" being chucked about.

Edit: Don't take my criticisms of power to take it to mean it won't sell, I'm sure it will. It'll appeal to the same crowd that buy diesel TT's and the like :p
