title explains most points, looking for a silent cpu cooler for a antec P280 (or maybe CM silencio rc 550) would only be used to cool an older phenom quad core with no overclock, but silence is a must. This is currently my folding rig which when running 24/7 is way too loud for my liking.

was looking at the noctua NH U12P SE2

i know this is a bit over kill for such an old cpu but I want the pc to be as silent as possible.

A Bigger heatsink usually means a quieter result at a given temperature. To that end I'd probably go NH-D14, silver arrow or possibly one of those phantek jobbies. That said the NH-U12P is perfectly competent but just not outstanding compared with dual radiator types and you could probably go cheaper for similar results.

For silence, get the thermalright VX with two 600rpm fans. If you want more performance in the future, simply upgrade the fans. Alternatively, grab a silver arrow and run it passively. As long as you have good airflow, it will cope with the CPU fine.

You could also look at the Thermalright HR-02 which is a massive heatsink designed for passive use in conjunction with the existing exhaust fan on the case. You can add fans to it for additional cooling too. Big and heavy though.

Here's a comparison of standard tower (similar dimensions to NH-U12P) and the HR-02.

Thanks or the info lads just wondering would an antec h2o 620 be any good for quiet build if I replaced the Stock fan with say something like an akasa venom fan at a low rpm???? It's only 43 quid at the minute I think.

I've got the Noctua and Silencio combo and still fitting it together, but think the HSF is too large
