Have tried running as Admin, and as XP SP2 and still no joy.

Appreciate any help!

You could try the Unofficial Patch that fixed lots of bugs. However I'm not sure how this plays with the Steam version. I'm sure it will be fine though.

Also this page here mentions codecs causing the problems so this might help.

Thanks for your help,But id rather not mess around with it,Steam should have it updated and patched fully anyway shouldnt it?

Also 4gb patch helps.

Same as top,Does steam not fully patch?

imo the unnoficial patch is a waste of time, it only fixes a few rare problems, the 4gb patch is a must though, for many people it completely fixes ctd's.

The unnoficial paych is a fan made patch which at the time it first came out fixed a lot of issues people were having with the game(official patched eventually adressed almost all of these problems anyway though)
The 4gb patch allows the game to use more than 2gb RAM

Steam wont auto apply the unofficial patch. It's fan made to address many of the problems the developers didn't fix.

I'm pretty sure you can't break anything applying it, but you can fix lots that was wrong with the game. Having said that you could just copy the install directory and restore it back if it don't fix it and your not sure about using it.

Did you look into the codec conflict problems noted in the forum post. Might be the exact problem you have with it crashing with looping sound

3 things you should do to sort this.

4gb patch the .exe.

Install the official and unofficial patches

Download and install streamline.

The 3 above should eliminate 80% of all crashes.

I believe there was also a problem with the ffdshow codec and Oblivion as well, you should open ffdshow and add Oblivion to the excluded programs list(i had to do this i think, it has been ages since i played it)

Seeing all those .net errors would lead me to uninstalling and reinstalling .net myself.

Yeah i was getting those errors before,Which was stopping GTA IV working and i ran windows updates and it downloaded and installed all the latest .net for me,GTA IV works fine now.

As for Oblivion,Im downloading the unofficial patchs & updates right now,Will post back with results. ;)

Installed un-official patch + Updater patch and still no go,I get to the game menu and start a new game then i just get a black screen with sound looping.

Soooo annoying!

I had a very similar problem and what fixed it for me was:
Set steam to run as an administrator.
Go to Steam/Steamapps/common/oblivion, and set both oblivion.exe and oblivionlauncher.exe to run as administrator by right clicking, properties and going to the compatibility tab.
Go to the Documents folder, Games, and delete the "oblivion" folder. This'll delete any saves you might have so back them up first.

Got a fix for the problem from someone else,It was because GX sound option was enabled in the Xonar D1 settings,Disabled it and it works fine now.
