Ok here's mine

Ive been in the IT industry since 1996 (15 years) born using SCO Openserver then SUN Microsystems, then Linux, then hypervisors, VMware vsphere, Xenserver, Xenapp, Xendesktop, now I find myself working for a VoIP company and tbh I'm bored its no challenge but they are winning business because they are the elite of VoIP in the UK, however I know nothing about VoiIP but maybe I'm gifted because I pick things up easily, I went on a Session Border Controller Course (SIP based service providers) and had a one off free chance of taking the exam (less than 30% chance according to the tutor) but I passed - it wasent hard but I'm bored and worried my original skills are wasting away, I've seen a job for £60k doing what I enjoy but with the current climate I'm worried, what would you do, its like this:

1. Continue to work for VoIP but be bored, zzzzz ville but you can do it and earn good money, the worry = old skills rot away, market leaves you, non employable in 3 years time

2. Move on through old skills (what you enjoy) and take chance in the current market

Would really appreciate your opinons guys, p*** takes welcome, just let me know what you think - thanks :D

When you say the VoIP elite please don't tell me you're talking about Nortel!:p

Will your current skills pay the mortgage and put food on the table? If so and you don't like working on VoIP then don't do it, stick to what you enjoy. I work for an IT Dept on the telephony network and TBH I'm only here because I couldn't think of anything else to do after I left the forces. I'd much rather be working in a gym or for an animal rescue charity but those won't pay very well unless I got very lucky.

No not Nortel dont worry, and anyway they were taking over by AVAYA

Its just dull, I'm not being big headed or clever here but I could do what I'm doing right now for the next 5 years and earn a good wage and bonus but its boring and I will lose my original skils, think rotting away

Sounds big headed but its not meant to, I just was lucky before I wanted to try everything and I got it, so I was brought up doing a variety of everything and I put the out of hours in to learn it now I'm bored but I have 6+ years of redundancy pay behind me, if I leave maybe I get to do what I want to do for more cash but I have no fallback

Know what I mean? hmmmm I've been thining about this all year would appreciate your guys help

Plus got a little one on the way now too but can't help but be bored.....

Have you ever thought of crack cocaine?

Anyway I'd say keep moving as you are hardly going to become stuck anytime soon, you don't seem to favour the staying put option so you have answered it yourself.

A certain element of specialisation is inevitable -- nay, essential -- within the IT industry. I guess you just need to decide whether VOIP platforms are really your "thing".

They aren't tbh its dull, its only now "they" are embrasing virtualisation, zzzz and even then its way behind

I just find it sleepville, good money yes, secure yes, but boring this is my issue, what would you do?

Honestly... I don't know. I do like an easy life so could put up with being bored/understimulated as long as the money is good and security is high. Plenty of ways to entertain myself!

Eventually that catches up with you, though, which I guess is your issue now, but there's a point where you ought to think well... is it really that bad? Does the dislike/boredom of what you do actually have you feeling like crap in the morning because you have to head off and do it? If it gets to that point, then dive into something else.

If you just feel a bit of a cheat because it's all so easy, and for good money, then just count yourself lucky and get on with the gravy train, baby!

Thought about asking the company for a few hours a week spending time on your own projects? Which you would let the company own the rights.

I hear that's what they do at Google.
