BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Back to what it's supposed to be this morning...

Is this how its going to be?....nice and fast during the day, completely unusable after about 4pm?

Did you try rebooting the router and modem when the speed dropped?

Yeah, made no difference.

I could just about live with the slower speed for downloading stuff during peak time,as it was still faster than my old connection, but what drives me nuts, are the lousy ping times, making online gaming a waste of time.

During the day i was getting sub 20ms pings, last night they were over 120ms..

trace route to the BBC servers were showing 150ms pings as well.

Probably yes, but that's talktalk for you. Cancel and go with infinity.

I've been with TalkTalk for 4yrs, and was perfectly happy with them, it was slow (3.5mb) but perfectly stable, and even during peak times i never had a problem with ping times and could online game 24/7.

And as of right now, it would make no difference 'switching' to BT Infinity, as i would be connected to exactly the same infrastructure, same street cabinet.

TalkTalk are using the Infinity network ATM....the label maybe be different, but the ingredients are just the same.

And i have seen complaints from people in this forum having similar problems with BT Infinity, whilst others have no problems, so as ever with UK ISP's it seems to be a post code lottery as to whether you suffer from peak time congestion.

The congestion you're seeing is on the TT network. Traffic is offloaded to TT as soon as it hits the exchange.

Has anyone had any dealings with the 'live chat' assistance with BT?

Yesterday I noticed 2 exchanges near me (not mine) were due for the infinity upgrade, so asked why my exchange wasn't given a date, then told that it was available, but due to technical issues it would be another few weeks until my exchange would be ready.

Does this sound right? I would have thought the rollout map would have shown my exchange if it was already upgraded or due to be upgraded. Think I've just been fobbed off or are the guys on the live chat usually more help than the info on BT.com?

Is it on one of the three lists?

Nope none of the three, the other two exchanges are (Aberdeen ashgrove and denburn) but no mention anywhere of my exchange which is aberdeen West.

Getting that sinking feeling again that I've been fobbed off by customer services

So people are still recommending BT Infinity then? Whats everyones speeds tonight?

Definitely mate.

I imagine Hetton's exchange is close enough that you'll have a pretty similar experience: I've never noticed any congestion; and can't say I've noticed torrent throttling (though I don't torrent 24/7).

Well I spoke to them again, and guess what? NOT available on my exchange, and no plans too either, just lied to get me off their backs!

Seems I have to live near a big business to get Infinity, so BT can reap the benefits of a business line!

I knew BT was full of ****'s but this is taking it a bit far isn't it?

Someone got it wrong adding to your sense of injustice so clearly that plus sense of entitlement means we should all agree that BT are clearly a crap company and unworthy of anyones business.

While it sucks when someone gives incorrect info you'll find it in most service industries, there's always someone with a bit of out of date or silly info that causes you hassle. In your case it's caused you nothing but a little dashing of hopes, it's not like any money has changed hands so perhaps a little perspective is in order.

Switched from BT to O2 on the promise of being able to keep a phone number (loooong story) after it all went through, turns out we DIDN'T get to keep our number with various implications to a housemates lost business etc. In the end we had 6 months free as a result of the screw up. Basically, mistakes happen, your's was perhaps of your own making "X RANDOM PERSON ON BT SERVICE CHAT SAID I COULD GET IT!!" after various other info was telling you otherwise but of course tears will be shed and fingers pointed.

Where i'm from (Sheffield) for various mystical reasons the city centre exchange won't be upgraded while all/most of the outlying suberbs will. Luckily i'm moving from near the city centre next week to next door to a green BT infinity cabinet about 1/4 mile down the road (the move isn't broadband related!) so the 39.1Mb estimated will be lovely.

Short answer: No.

was reading the start of this thread, and saw that P2P uploads are capped at 1mb?

How is it for Streaming? 1080p on twitch.TV would they cap that as well?

The p2p is only throttled when usage is high, my upload is hardly ever capped.

Its now maxing out since I took that.

It will stream 1080p easy, for example you can instantly stream a BD-25 off megashares using VLC.
