Console sales/discussion - Wii vs PS3/xbox

My 360 is like 5 years old !

In that time you have thrown £600 into graphic card. Granted, you have free online gaming.

How much is X-box sub? £30 a year? multiply by 5 = £150

That's £350 v £600 (+ CPU upgrade no doubt, and RAM)

Now, you still think it is expensive?
No, I have only thrown £200 into graphics cards, the majority of my purchases in the last few years were processors.
Like I said, these are my desktop PCs as well as gaming PCs, if I did 360 gaming then I would still need a laptop so I have hardly spent much more than you. In total, I have a spent a little over 1k over the last few years on PC hardware. It's not that much and there are various reasons such as graphics and WASD that make it a no brainier for me.

I really don't like the Wii, I think it's pretty garbage to be fair.

I think the 360/PS3 are just simply tied, though if the PS3 lost some of its exclusives the 360 would pull ahead quite easily, the software is just nicer.

The PC only fails in comparison to console because the amount you have to spend on upgrading them. The PC is built for multi-purpose/multitasking, consoles are made to do one thing at a time and one thing at a time pretty well, I look forward to seeing what happens when consoles advance to the point of requiring Watercooling.

IMO consoles fail in comparsion to PC's due to one thing - the mouse accuracy on FPS'ers, thats all. Put 1 person on a PC and 1 on a console, if they could play against eachother, the PC player would win every time.

I agree that games are cheaper on PC. Also you pretty much have to have a PC/laptop for work/admin/internet browsing, so you need to remove that cost from the cost of a gaming pc, given it can be used for both.

Console gaming and PC gaming probably ends up at a similar price overall, unless the PC gamer is a pretty regular upgrader. I wouldn't say console gaming is inherently worse than PC gaming though. Split screen with mates is awesome, and driving, platforming and fighting games are WAY better on console. Obviously the opposite can be said for things like strategy games. FPSs are probably a matter of opinion, some will prefer on console, some will prefer PC.

That's if you are playing FPS.

Not so much on Forza is it? Or Final Fantasy or Zelda.

Own a wii and have had an xbox360 since dec 2006
I would think the total play time on the xbox has been 8 hours max and the wii only gets used by the g/f or when people are round.

So why am i thinking of getting a ps3?! :D

I thought it was current sales, but seems its market share?

Also didn't notice that's 2009, back to google to try and ind something better.

Hmm. I got all my sales figures from wikipedia but they seem pretty reliable. I know that the 360>PS3 in europe, and that the PS3 utterly raped the 360 in Japan, but i'm not sure about what the story is elsewhere. I assumed they were pretty much tied in America.

So what you really mean is £350 + £1000 (for the cheapest MBP) vs £600....hmmm sounds like getting a console is a great deal...oh wait.

No, I got my MBP to work on the move. I rarely use it to do anything else. It is unrelated to gaming.

I also have a iMac. Same as above. Think of it you don't take into your office machine into account.

Now, do I want to throw £1k at a PC to play games? or do I spend £300 on an X-box?

Hmmmmmm.

Npyou like to waste money.
The Xbox looks so tempting, as wii and PV suck for driving games. But main reason is its so close to becoming a perfect HTPC. Just not quite there yet.

Stop saying 1k, that is the price of a very top end. Anyone could quite easily get away with £650 max.
Console is of course cheap, it's 6-8 years old. It's about what is most cost efficient for fun. You can build a decent gaming desktop for £150 more than a bog standard laptop. Hardly breaking the bank in all things considered so that you can have better graphics and input method.
