i5 2500k throttling - Why?!

I'm having a bit of trouble overclocking my i5 2500k

My spec: ASRock Z68 PRO3 B3
i5 2500k
2 X 4Gb Mushkin Blackline DDR3

It keeps throttling down to 1.6GHz when running Prime95.

I've tried everything.

Thermal throttling - disabled
Overheat protection - disabled
Core Current Limit - 250

Turbo Boost Power Limit
Short limit - 250
Long limit - 250

It doesn't even seem to be related to temperature. It's been up to 75deg without doing it, but has then done it at 60deg. It is intermittent. It seems to only do it about ten or more minutes into Prime95. It also volts down to 0.968V when this happens.

Anyone any ideas?

C1E is disabled, however on the ASRock motherboards the Speedstep has to be left on or it doesn't let you adjust the power limits and then throttles down anyway - unless you have another suggestion

Just wondering, why wouldn't you want it to throttle down when it's not under load?

Edit: Never mind, just noticed it's throttling when it is under load.

Have you tried a CMOS reset and then testing with optimised default?

If that doesn;t work I would also consider a BIOS update just incase your present one is slightly corrupt.

Running with optmised defaults (i.e. not overclocked) it's fine, running with 24hour Prime95 stable overclock at 4.3GHz it's also fine.

I've narrowed the problem down to one area: it only happens when using offset mode.
Fixed mode is fine, up to 4.6GHz now.

That's just asking for trouble

Maybe prime95 doing it's thing? Like Intel burn test, it goes through different things and hits the ram leaves cpu mainly alone..

But it shouldn't throttle at all... even if Prime gave it no loading.

The reason I turned overheat protection and thermal throttling off was that I was monitoring it constantly. I.e. I was sitting in front of it the whole time.

Anyway. The chip now appears to have died.

Most temp this chip ever got: 76deg
Most Vcore it ever got: 1.368V
This was at just 4.5GHz

Maybe the throttling was the chip's earliest sign of dying... who knows

Tried updating BIOS? It's the only thing which I can think of which is causing the problem seeing it's offset mode causing it.

If Intel speedstep is on then you need to look in windows power saving and choose "high performance" power profile, then it won't throttle

lol, what I actually meant was any ideas why the chip died with such an mild overclock

But - today i purchased a new i5 2500k from overclockers (and got a £5 off code from them in the package - thanks guys)

And it's still the same. I reckon the motherboard has died. It's not the ram, I've swapped that out.

Thoughts before I order a new mobo? The mobo in question is an ASRock Z68 Pro3.

I don't really want to go Gigabyte, what do you recommend? Asus? another ASRock? MSI?

I was looking at the Asus P8Z68-V, it's in the price range but out of stock unfortunately, what do people think? Has good reviews for overclocking
