For a Fiat Punto 1.2 ELX 3 door, v reg 2000, 126000 miles. Some service history with a few receipts of work done engine sounds healthy enough and gearbox is smooth. Has a few light surface scratches but overall pretty good condition. Im currently looking for my first car and this has caught my eye, i was thinking around £600 would be a good price what do you think?

If you can get it for £500 then probably fair.

I'd be wanting to have someone look it over properly though who knows a bit about engines.

I had a W reg 2000 1.2 ELX Punto as my first car and it never caused me a single problem, but this was 4 years ago and half the mileage.

Ok, My dad took me to see it yesterday and he used to be a mechanic so he knows his way around engines, it looked relatively clean (other then a few leaves as its been sat under a tree:)) and as above it didnt sound like a sack of nails or anywhere near it, it looks like its been looked after in its life, comes with 2 sets of original keys and something like 9-10 past MOT certificates, user manual and everything is standard. I forgot to mention its a MK2 if that changes anything.

Well I paid £800 for my 2003 1.2 Active Punto (Mk2) with 75,000 on the clock. The body work on my car isn't as good as I'd hoped but at the end of the day, it drives, can't complain as it's only a first car. So yeah - I would say round about the £500 mark.

It should have three keys two normal and a red, if you don't get the red and you lose keys then your stuffed, unless the changed it. Check the headgasket, wife's 1.2 Punto went but they are cheap to fix, there was a mass recall for Fiat to change every solid brake line, see if it's applicable to yours and if it's done, I don't think age / mileage.

Apart from that my wife's was reliable and nippy enough for her.

Fiat stopped the red key with the MK2 Punto I think.

It had tax and MOT, was an auction and someone bid a little more then i was willing to pay, back to looking again :(

Yeah i did think that earlier, dont see many over or around that mileage and it probably wouldnt survive for much longer

How can you check the headgasket?

Don't buy a Punto with 126k up it for your first car mate look around for something better, 600 quid is way to much money & it's got far to many miles on it for a little motor. For that money you want about 80k & all the MOT's to back the mileage up.

After the MK1 Punto they stopped it, correct. If you want to get a genuine key from Fiat for a MK2 Punto be prepared to pay north of £120.

I'd have said 126k was too leggy for a Fiat anyway. Plenty more fish in the sea. :)

Check oil filler cap for mayo, general oil leaks from the gasket, blue smoke out the exhaust.
