Split between diesels

Have you really felt it though? More than you'll feel dropping £8000 on a car?

Yes I have felt it, but I do see your point about dropping 8k on a car in comparison. The ATR has to go though. I am now taking a look at Mazda6's. I like the BOSE speakers some of them have I must admit. How comfortable are they to drive?

Save your money.

I could have blown a lot more than I did on a car, but got a cheapy Rover 75 to do me along. Much better things for me to be spending several thousands on.

Keep the ATR :)

My ATR currently returns 26mpg so anything is an improvement! :D

I have been looking at BMW 320ds and Volvo S40 2.0d's. I drove a really smooth and nice BMW 320d the other night and I was impressed. It was a 55plate and had done 93k miles. It is up for £7,750 which I think is a lot for the milage but it seriously looked mint. Book says it returns 62mpg on the motorway, which is where I spend 95% of my driving.

If your getting <30mpg out of the ATR with 95% motorway driving then there's either something wrong with the car or your foot, if its the latter then you would never manage the 62mpg claimed figure of the BMW, not trying to offend you just pointing it out.

The above is true to an extent, although I'm pretty certain you'd never acheive the book economy figures without extensive tail winds and never accelerating beyond the help of gravitational pull.

Book MPG figures for most manufacturers seem to be pretty out of sync with real-life, certainly recently.

LPG the ATR!

Nope, its over 140k miles on the clock now and I dont actually enjoy the car that much.

Mazda 6 isn't bad actually, i'd go for that or a 2.2 iCDTI Accord.

If the Mazda6 is anything like the Mazda3 it would be 'ok' but nothing special. It was an easy car to drive, but the comfort wasnt completely there. I have been looking at the Accord but it just looks so bland and meh, not interested in it at all really.

No offence taken. Although 95% of my driving is on the motorway, it takes me about 30-45mins to get to the motorway in the morning. 1st gear action for about 2miles due to traffic.

I have spoken to the ATR club guys and they agree that 26-28mpg is the going average for a car of my age/milage and my annoying stop/start mornings.

I am looking for a car that ticks most of the boxes but feels right and suits me, rather then one that just is bland and boring to be in. Its kind of hard to explain really. I am just going to have to keep my eyes open really.

you know a 320d is NOT going to givr you 60+ mpg don't you?

I've had my 320d auto coupe for about 4 months now and it spends most of its life on the M25 and M3, not ALL the time and I expect thats the issue, the mpg dips off when I'm doing the 10 miles to the mway and then creeps up when I get on the mway.

I reset my trip computer every time I fill up and I've never done more than 45.5mpg out of a whole tank and I drive like a saint, I always set the trip thingy to show me the mpg and try and keep the thing on the dash over 50. I'm not mad, there is a novelty factor here coming from a focus ST hence the mpg obsession, it's fading but it's not gone quite yet :)

But anyway, my point is don't expect to see 60mpg, ain't gonna happen.

I like them but get the proper alloys.

I really considered one of those but decided on a complete whim to get the 320, I'm sure the mondeo is every bit as good.

Right, I have taken all of your comments on board.

I put a deposit down on this tonight. There is an error on their advertising, its only done 54,000 miles so thats a huge plus. They are MOTing it for me tomorrow too, so I will get a full year MOT.

It drove amazingly well and just felt right.

Thoughts?

Crikey, i get 45mpg out of my 318ti on a run.

I said on a tank, that includes the 10 miles stop/start to and from the motorway. On the rare occasions I fill up on the motorway and keep going on the motorway I end up over 50mpg but over the course of a normal tank which is probably 70-80% motorway although often at rush hour I've never got over 45.5mpg over the 550ish miles on a tank.

Unfortunately you can't appear at 70mpg on a motorway.

I've no idea what mpg a 318ti is supposed to achieve but I'm still blown away, the is pretty much as quick on a day by day driving basis as my focus st and does roughly double the mpg, half the tax and double the service interval :)

The 3 or 6 are never going to be anything special in diesel form, but the newer 6 is quite a nice car in truth.

Hence why I choose to get one. It was actually more comfortable then I remember the 3 being. The power wasnt great, but for a motorway crusier and a money saver I like it. Also I think it looks great.
