I'm in the market for a 120Hz monitor for my PC, but am thinking I'd like to try Gran Turismo 5 in 3D on my PS3.

Was thinking about a Samsung S23A700D or Benq XL2420T - what are the screen requirements for 3D on a PS3?

Thanks a lot guys :)

Hi there,

The specification to look out for in terms of 3D monitors for the PC is "3D via HDMI 1.4" or similar.

Many monitors do 3D via dual-link DVI or displayport 1.2, but you won't be able to use any of these with a PS3 for 3D.

For the BenQ XL2420T there is no mention whether the HDMI port is 1.4. Since the Displayport version is mentioned as 1.2, then most likely the HDMI is only 1.3 and they aren't highlighting it (if so then it wouldn't do PS3 3D).

The Samsung S23A700D also doesn't advertise the HDMI version apart from connecting to 60Hz devices.

If you want something that will certainly work then a Samsung S23A750D would be my first choice.

Works fine on my Acer HN274H - actually only tried movies via the PS3, not games, though I can give GT5 a spin this week to see what it's like (been meaning to do it for a while).

Do you know if the Samsung S27A950D would work? Does it have HDMI '1.4'? I'd want this over the 750D for the addition of DVI (for my PC).

Aye, the S27A950 would work just as well as the 750D - since it also has a HDMI 1.4 port (see here).

However, it is more expensive and you could just as easily connect your PC to the 750D monitor via the Display port connection to get the 1080p@120Hz signal.

Thanks Andi. I'm aware of the extra cost for the 950, it's just that I'd like DVI in case I switch to Nvidia, plus it's an extra 4" of screen estate.

Much appreciate the comments though, and will bear HDMI 1.4 in mind from now on :)

Ah, if you want the option to play 120Hz via DVI in the future (if you change to an Nvidia graphics card) then that's fair enough. Though I would be very surprised if Nvidia didn't include displayport as standard for there upcoming 28nm graphics cards and beyond.

When I mentioned 750D, I should have been more clear as there is also a 27 version of the 750D - the S27A750D which is around £50 cheaper than the 950D.
