I recently got a good deal on my brothers old Sony Xperia Play (or Zeus or R800i, whatever its called.) He didnt want it any more so being a good brother I took it off his hands for a small fee! :D

He had a problem with it a while back and had to do a full restore on it, so its factory standard at the mo.

Im completely new to mobile gaming so can anyone recommend any good apps or games or upgrades for the Play?

Ive heard its good to 'root' the phone so it becomes unlocked and you can install custom apps/games on it, like old PSX games and emulators etc.

Any advice is much appreciated! :)

I've been lazy to root mine as there wasn't much bloatware installed at first, but a recent update from O2 changed that... However Android is very customizable already without rooting, so consider this as an optional choice.

What sort of games does he play? Sadly you can't use the inbuilt emulator to play other PSX games apart from the preinstalled Crash Bandicoot, but I've installed this and am able to play all my old PSX games perfectly (brings back memories).

Also, check out this link for four free games: http://www.sonyericsson.com/eapromo/?cc=gb&lc=en

PSX4Droid is free for Android, and apparently better than FPse :). I use FPse on my SGS2 though since PSX4Droid doesn't seem to work on Samsung SGS2 firmware, only AOSP ROMs :(. FPse still runs all my games though, I just had to pay for it instead :).

Edit: PSX4Droid isn't on the market, it's easily found on Google though :).

Apparently it's pretty buggy with the Play, so I went with FPse as it has better Play support.

I'd be looking to get some of the good old psx platform games, like oddworld etc plus driving games old and new.

Is there anyway of downloading games/apps without using the mobile network, I dont want to clock up huge data charges. We dont have Wifi in the house, can I use the android market on the PC and connect my Play to the PC through USB and transfer the downloads accross?

Ah, fair enough :). PSX4Droid has issues with more than Samsung ROMs then, shame :(.

Edit: Go round a mates and download/transfer stuff? :p. I think internet can only be shared from the phone to the PC using USB :(.

FPSE is pretty fine......works on FFVII, Vagrant Story, Abes Oddessey(?) and Broken Sword - these are all I have tried so far.
Also, there are plenty of Xperia Play optimised games on the Market and some developers (Gameloft, for example) also have games on their own sites.
XDA have plenty of hints/tips on other optimisations, including another effective PS emulator (PSXPERIA).....and also guides on easy 1-click root :) Head over to XDA and you will find a list of approx. 180 games that are Xperia Play tested and so on...
Add in some decent emulators for the likes of Megadrive and so on, and there really is no shortage of games that really work well on the Xperia Play, especially as there are usually versions that support the gamepad, rather than having to rely on iffy touch control ;)
