10 thousand deposited into my account by mistake...

The tax credit people put 3k in my account by mistake when I was a student. We rang them to try and give it back but they said they couldn't take it and we would just pay it back at like £10 a week for ever from any benefits we got.

Saved me at the time as I had a family and was trying to do a degree and feed a family on next to nothing. I think it lasted about a day and all went on bills :P

I had £8k deposited to my account about 4 months ago. I informed the bank that I did not recognise the deposit and don't know where it came from. They called me back and said it looked fine, came from another account I had (it hadn't). Oh wells, its there if they ever want it back.

I guess RBS don't really care if a measly £8k disappears every now and then.

And it's theft if you keep it because you know it isn't yours.

This...

I've heard plenty of stories where money has accidently been passed on to another party. Then they've been and spent it and eventually had to pay everything back.

There was a classic story in the paper last year, some woman had found a lottery ticket outside the shop on the floor. Anyway not that she won the full amount but they did win something like 50k. She paid off all her debts, bought the family a holiday etc. Turned out the original owner who knew his numbers but couldn't find his ticket was luckily enough to have his receipt that he bought the ticket on. After cross-checking it was verified that he was the original owner and was able to take the woman to court to get his money back. Which finally resulted in her having to pay all the winnings back to him.

So i guess if you have 10 grand to pay the original owner back if they can trace it back to your account then i guess SPEND AWAYYY!!!

Friend of mine had £1500 deposited in his account, he queried it with his bank and got no satisfactory reason as to why, so he left it there for 6 months, then spent it.

To my knowledge, he never found out what the hell was going on, nor had to pay it back again!

Lucky ****!

i bet this is the same as theft by finding,

if you are honest tell the bank

if you are not honest say nothing but keep hold of the money for a year (or two)

(personally id go for the second option)

If you send me on all your bank details I'll forward on the rest of the 10 million which I need to get out of the country before my brother steals it all. You can keep 10% of the funds for your help.

Regards,
Prince of Nigeria.

Leave it there....... try your best to manage your account as if the £10,000 mark is actually your zero mark.

If its there on the 1st Jan 2013, maybe transfer it to a high interest savings account. Leave it there another year.

2 years on, you should be in the clear.... and have made £5k a year for doing FA other than being mildly self controlled.

Have a hell of a NYE 2014/15..... or marry that girl/put towards a deposit on that house.

If films have taught me anything, it's that you're being set up as a spy on the take from China/Russia/lizardmen. Time to run, hide in cheap motels, dye your hair and track down who did this to you.

But on the plus side you're statistically likely to meet an attractive woman during the course of all this! :D

That's a more interesting legal question. If you tell them it's not yours and they insist that it is, does that give you any legal claim to it?

Have a link to this account that pays £5k interest pa on a balance of £10K?

Put it into a savings account and wait for a couple of years to see if anyone contacts you about it. If nothing happens, spend it.
