10 thousand deposited into my account by mistake...

I cant understand the legal standpoint of it being theft to keep money someone gave you? If I walked up to someone in the street and gave them £100, could I then call the cops if they use it?

no because you willingly gave the money away and you chose who to give it to.

The transfer is likely an error by the bank or by the originator, the OP was not the correct recipient. The law in the UK would likely classify it as theft or theft by deception - you know the money is not meant for you but kept it anyway.

Notify the bank, shove it in a seperate account and leave it alone, you'll get to keep any interest it makes you (not that its a lot). If you notify them (preferably in writing as well) and then they still do nothing about it after 12 months you'll probably be ok.....maybe....

take all your money out of that account and close the account, open a new account at another bank or else they will remove the money

my cousin once got £2.5K put into his santander account, after 6 weeks he got a letter through apologize for the mistake, they gave him £100 and 6 months free insurance and took the money out...

Two precision engineers are talking, one says, 'I was sacked from my previous job for miscalculating something by twenty thou', the other one says, 'that sounds harsh, who were you working for?', the first replies, 'Barclays Bank'.
