Milly Dowler's voicemail was hacked by News of the Screws

To say that there is a lot of stuff that went on behind the scenes is an understatement.

I wouldn't be surprised turned this whole news international thing into a film in a few years time, it would certainly make for some interesting viewing...

How long can the top brass at News international survive?

BBC Newsnight has obtained a dossier of evidence from an ex-policeman hired by the News of The World (NoW) which shows the newspaper was engaged in covert surveillance on an industrial scale.

Over eight years Derek Webb was paid to follow more than 90 targets selected by staff at the newspaper.

His targets included Prince William, former attorney general Lord Goldsmith and football pundit Gary Lineker.

Relatives, such as the parents of actor Daniel Radcliffe, were also targeted.

Speaking exclusively to Newsnight's Richard Watson, Mr Webb said that shortly after setting up his own private detective agency in 2003 he was contacted by the NoW and offered work.

He continued to work for the newspaper until it was shut down in July after a string of allegations emerged about the hacking of phones, including that of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

"I was working for them extensively on many jobs throughout that time. I never knew when I was going to be required. They phoned me up by the day or by the night... It could be anywhere in the country."

(sorry for the bump)

apparently there's a strong chance it was never hacked by the NOTW as the police are now believing it may be a case that the voicemails were auto deleted by the phone network. a journalist from the daily mail rang the dowler's and asked if they would be giving the £3m compensation back to new international. a little blunt and harsh but tbf if they didn't hack her phone, does he not have a point?

That's inaccurate, Milly Dowler's voice mail definitely was hacked by NOTW, the guy who did it has admitted it. It now looks likely that he didn't delete voice mails though, which had been claimed by the Guardian. I don't know why the Daily Mail thinks this means the Dowler's should give their compensation back, pretty low (but typical) of them to put pressure on them to do so.

i did wonder how they agreed to give the compensation or how it ever got so far if there was no smoke without fire tbh but still, bit of a shambles.

Yeah, I expect that News International will sue GMG (probably successfully) once this has all died down a bit.

I saw daily mail and didn't bother reading any further tbh worst hate filled rag in the country constantly trying to get one section of society onto the back of another wouldn't use it in the toilet.

From what I read of what Scotland Yard told the Leveson Inquiry, NOTW did still illegally listen to Milly Downer's voicemails by guessing her pin. However the 'Voicemails have been deleted = Milly's listened to them = Milly's alive' was not NOTW, they simply dropped off the network after 72 hours.

Wonder when The Guardian are going to apologise for the headline "Paper deleted missing schoolgirl's voicemails, giving family false hope"...

Probably the same way the NOTW used to apologise to people it had written incorrect, damaging stories about - a printed apology on page 21 and a bit of money as compensation. It's worth noting that the Guardian still claim the evidence they have supports their story and even if the NoTW did not delete voicemails, it does not let them off the hook for what I believe is running a criminal enterprise.

"Evidence secured by the police following the publication of this article has established that the News of the World was not responsible for the deletion of voicemails which caused Milly Dowler's parents to have false hope that she was alive."

Also:

The hacking of schoolgirl Milly Dowler's phone may have led to her voicemail messages being deleted, the jury in the hacking trial has heard.

However, Mr Justice Saunders said claims that someone from the News of the World deliberately deleted the voicemail messages were "not true".

The Guardian later published a correction stating that the News of the World was "unlikely to have been responsible for the deletion of a set of voicemails from the phone that caused her parents to have false hopes that she was alive".

OldCoals is being economical with the truth, to put it mildly.
