Don’t be confused by anyone claiming that the indefinite detention legislation does not apply to American citizens. It does. There is an exemption for American citizens from the mandatory detention requirement (section 1032 of the bill), but no exemption for American citizens from the authorization to use the military to indefinitely detain people without charge or trial (section 1031 of the bill). So, the result is that, under the bill, the military has the power to indefinitely imprison American citizens, but it does not have to use its power unless ordered to do so.

Pretty weird to see how once a decent country is being destroyed from the inside. Seems as if after 9/11 American has forgotten it's constitution and its value. Anyone remember how the Patriot act which was used to "fight terrorism" has only been used to fight terrorism a negligible amount compared to how much it has been used for the war on drugs and fraud? I can imagine this act is only going to be used in a bad way, political prisoners etc.. It's a real shame to see how this once great country is being torn apart by its own government. If this passes as well as SOPA, America will be no different than the countries they criticise such as China & Russia.

In what era would you consider the US to have been a 'great country'? When hasn't it had major problems with corruption and politicians who just don't give a crap about actual people?

It's always had problems and has always treated its citizens badly. This is just another example of that.

I find SOPA more worrying because that dumb arse Bill will cause trouble for the rest of the Internet. However, if the Americans aren't on the streets protesting about the detention bill then they deserve it. Jefferson is probably spinning in his grave over the wholesale erosion of their liberties.

Pre 9/11 was much better than after. Since then it has been a constant war on "terror", which means they have forgotten their values that many fought for. America has had lots of problems but this is the last straw, along with SOPA it is practically becoming an Orwellian state.
