Internet Explorer: Microsoft plans 'silent' updates

Erm, extremely likely? Such sites do exist...

Right, but like I said, why would anybody get a windows update from anywhere but the shortcut on the start menu? it's only if that was redirected that you'd be at risk surely

You're assuming quite a lot here, not everyone is as computer literate as you.

User gets malware from wherever, malware then pops up saying "click here to update your windows installation", silly user clicks and lands on a fake MS update website.

Job done.

Is this the one that's supposed to force everyone in IE6 to upgrade to IE8?

If so, ace idea. IE6 is so old it deserves to be on Antiques Roadshow soon.

You're still missing the point, surprisingly. The article doesn't talk about updates to Windows (the OS), it's about updates to Internet Explorer (the web browser). There's no shortcut to update IE on your start menu.

Did you actually read teh article at all? Or just stab at those couple of passages you quoted and reposted without really knowing what you were doing?

It's not clueless at all, but surely nobody is dumb enough to download "official updates" from anywhere except Windows Update. Like unsecure wireless, if you're dumb enough not to password it, you deserve to have it leeched lol

You appear to be very naive in the ways of the world with regards to IT. You've shown that in two threads now relating to Microsoft, i'm going to assume you don't work in the IT sector and that it's simply your hobby or suchlike?

Get a job in IT and you'll see what some users are like, stupidity knows no bounds.

I skim read it, like I said in the first post

No I don't work in IT, but I have friends that do, how many people can mistake a CD drive for a cup holder, I mean come on, really? a CUP HOLDER?!

The general public, as a collective, is packed to the rafters with morons of a remarkable calibre. If you don't believe this, you're probably one of them.

Edit: It's also pretty fatuous to tie in mistaking a CD drive for a cup holder with accidentally downloading malicious software from a phishing link. You really should start thinking about what you post.

And i have friends who do technical cut outs in metal using sand blasting machines but that doesn't make me an expert. That's an irrelevant point, you've made it very clear over the course of two threads that you don't know as much as you think you do, thus naive.

Though I'm willing to bet then that you're generally quite enthusiastic given your strong opinions on the matter so i'll give you some advice from someone who was once exactly the same: Accept you know nothing, then you'll learn a lot.

I don't mean that to sound as offensive as it does, so apologies for that but there's no easier way to word it.

It would also help if the OP learnt to fully read an article before posting it on here.

Must admit i haven't even bothered to read the article myself the responses alone have forced me to reply :D :p (that said my responses are't that relevant to the contents of the RSS)

anybody that still uses internet explorer deserves everything they get :)

Still heavily used in business's and schools due to various compatibility issues with software. Only very recently moved to google chrome site wide here though once they released full in depth group policy templates.
