Hi guys,

The mother-in-law has asked for some advice choosing a compact digital for the father-in-law (gulp).

I've got the Canon G10 as my compact and honestly can't fault it but that's out of the price range I've been given. Other than that I haven't used a digital camera for years so have no idea.

He travels a lot with work so will be used then as well as around the house no doubt for grandkids etc.

I'm thinking something fairly easy to use and wide angle for his travels.

Thanks in advance guys :)

Interested in this two (rather than posting a new thread) as a replacement for the one the GF lost.

Any advice greatly received.

Thanks

Superzooms:

Canon SX230 - Best pixel level IQ, light on features
Sony HX9V (With £40 cashback) - Best Movie mode, best features, just behind the Canon on IQ

Smaller Zooms:
Olympus XZ-1

Struggling to think of anything 'decent' under £300, where obviously the S95/G12 could be prime candidates.

I've been very impressed with the HX9V (Birthday present), the video/panorama/multi-shot modes (HDR/Low Light etc)/Smile detection/blink detection/24mm wider angle, 16x Zoom are all damn good, the £40 cashback means it's just around £200 all in, and it's pocketable/very well built..

The newer Fuji F600EXR might also be worth a look,

Also, the Canon S95 is probably worth the extra £45 or so if you want more manual controls etc, but it's still a little light on bells and whistles if that's your thing.

REALLY sorry Demon. Fantastic post and I did read it and end up getting him the S95 for £244.

Contemplated the G12 but think its a bit bulky for someone who isn't that into photography.
