Which 27" monitor to get?

Yes, connecting any HDMI device (including consoles) to a Hazro HZ27WC is impossible. You need the HZ27WD for that as that's the 'connection rich' model.

There are options, but far too costly for a simple test. You'd need something to upscale HDMI to 2560x1440 and output it over dual-link DVI, iirc there are solutions that do this but the prices are in the £3000+ range.
If your laptop has an expresscard slot it's possible to use a desktop graphicscard. Costs, a ~$80 PCB + the costs of a powersupply and videocard (~£60-80).

Thanks for that information, even the second option would bump up the expense to being not worth it, but at least I know now.

However (and this is a long shot, but thought I'd rule it out) would using a hdmi to dual link dvi cable allow for a lower resolution to be shown on the monitor, or would no signal be shown at all?

As a Dell U2711 owner, I can say it is fantastic and great to work with. Height adjustment and huge selection of ports is wonderful. Colours are rich and vibrant (most importantly accurate). My ONLY gripe is the anti-glare. It's never an issue, but occasionally when I'm working on photos and I want to apply some noise reduction really zoomed in, it's difficult to assess what's noise and what is just the matte cover. I can live with that for the benefit of the non-reflective surface (windows in my study), but if I could magically remove it for a day, I'd like to.

A HDMI to dual-link DVI cable is just some kind of ebay scam. It just has the connector of a dual link, the signal is still single link (HDMI / Single Link DVI are the same aside from optional sound over HDMI). So no, you'll just get a signal not recognized or something along those lines.

An HDMI to single-link DVI adapter should give you 1920x1080 on the screen. I have a dual-link KVM feeding my SA850; two of the inputs are dual-link, one single, and it switches quite happily between 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. The text is very reasonable but I haven't tried photo's or moving images yet.

Thanks, I'm considering just holding off and buying the monitor as the last component after I've built a pc, as I could always plug the pc into my tv to begin with. Or if a deal comes along too good to pass up on before that, I'll just ask a mate if I can take it round to his house and test it on his pc.

Wish I could trust hazro, but there's so much talk of poor quality control/dead pixels, I don't fancy taking any chances, which is a shame as they're perfect for me otherwise.
