is it possible to do weights and burn calories?

so low reps with high weights = build mass
high reps with low weights = weight loss?

ive read around and the word TONE is nonsense :p what do i aim for then to get definition?

Thanks :D

It is true that doing weights would increase the calories burned by the body as a greater muscle mass would lead to an increase in the amount of calories that the body burns at rest. If fat loss is your goal though you really can't ignore cardio vascular exercise without limiting your results. You also need to be consistent with your cardio training (ie bare minimum of 40 minutes, 3 times a week). Low reps, high weights (with the correct diet) would lead to an increased muscle mass, lower weights but a higher number of reps would lead to muscular endurance.

Read GordyR's sticky thread at the top of the forum for some great advice.

Surely lifting weights would increase muscle mass, thus increase weight? you need to do cardio to lose weight, running, crosstrainer, rowing etc....

Of course but only for a certain time and the body will need more work (different lift routines/reps) and better fuel (protein, amino acids, omega) I lost a lot of fat while putting on strength from doing plenty of cardio and a weights routine over the summer.

Cardio, once you stop exercising you stop using up calories, even when you have stopped lifting weights your body is using energy to rebuild the muscle fibres you have just torn/stretched

People think lifting weights for a few months and you are going to be ripped like Arnold, if it was that easy everyone would be massive and ripped.

Intredasting, I've lost over 50kg of fat with no cardio whatsoever. I guess I've been doing it all wrong and weight lifting will just make me bulky, not toned.

Bet all those blokes on that site weight more than me and I'm fat lol. Not saying it's not possible to lose weight by doing weights because you are burning calories, but just weights alone surely can't make you lose weight

It's hard to tell how much people weigh when they're at low BF, its pretty scary how light some guys can be even when they're in beast mode. Fat is bigger than muscle for the weight. A 200lb 6'0 fatty will look a bit chubby, 200lb 6' @ 10% bf will be huge and joocy.

Did u just call a bodybuilding male "juicy" ?

I'm reading conflicting things... I was told I could lift weights without any cardio and still lose weight.

Is this true or not?

Makes sense. I have really cut my diet back lately. Removing ALL junk food and eating healthier meals. I am not calorie counting as such but I'd say I'm about 1800 cals a day atm. I do probabaly need to start counting if I don't notice any difference in weight loss within the next few weeks.

It's true. First thing people need to do when they are using weight lifting for fat loss is to forget about scales and weight in general. It's all about body recomposition.

Take measurements of your chest, waist and gut and you'll definitely notice a big difference in those three measurements within 6 weeks if you are lifting intensely and consistently and your in a caloric deficit. You may not even be all that much lighter but you will look and feel different.

I have been doing it for about 3 weeks now and I've noticed a big difference in my shoulders and traps area and my bi's are looking good to. Still a lot of fat though ofcourse! :D

STOP THINKING HEIGH WEIGHT IS BAD

Who gives a **** how much someone weighs so long as it isn't all fat.

No, cardio at all not even HIIT

Thats some extreme dieting and lifting too

I did try it for a bit, but found I'd just subconsciously justify more food with 'It's ok, I ran/row'd/bike'd X today'. I'd rather make my deficit with consistent diet than with cardio.
