So just got home from uni to be told one of the pc's has locked down asking for windows to be activated. Bit strange as it has been running fine for 4+years. Thought it would be nice and simple as the product key is stuck to the side of the case. Had no luck with online activation or the auto telephone one. Got through to a person and get told my key isnt valid and thats that. Funny how it has worked fine all this time. So now i have a locked out pc with a useless copy of xp pro on it. would have been less hassle if i had actually pirated the ****ing thing. Just needed to vent

There was a thread on one of Microsofts forums about this, legit versions breaking after a certain update, google it, something like "legit serial number no longer valid"

just get a corp xp pro edition

You have done all you can to try and resolve this correctly
its MS fault if they cannot make updates dont break stuff

This has also randomly happened to my home PC with W7, nothing changed but it comes up and states that it needs to be activated. Luckily for me online activation worked but I have read that if so many activations occur on the 1 key then they do block the key until you ring up and speak to MS CS.

My dad had this on his Windows 7 install - perfectly legit copy of the OS (purchased from OcUK as it happens) - fortunatly on rebooting for the 3rd time it started working again.

TBH, if you have legitimately purchased Windows and Microsoft won't help you, despite your serial number being legit, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with you "legitimising" your system through "questionable" software if you get my drift

no you will always get some noob whining about it

I just find it funny its come up on xp. If i was going to pirate windows surely i would do it on windows 7. Xp is god knows how many years old now!

Bought from pc wirld or curries so would presume its legit!

Have you tried the product key on the side of the case as all computers (although I doubt those from OCUK are like this) are initially installed from a generic manufacturers image which is already activated with a single product key (this key is blocked from being used in activations) so it might be that key that is the problem and why your activation attempts have failed (unless you quoted the product key from the side of the case when you called microsoft).

You know I just posted something similar to this! What's Microsoft's game? They're activation system must be having a fit.

No, not a "Noob" as you so "maturely" put it, rather those people who have grown up to hate pirates and anything to do with them.
Sorry - but you'll grow-up one day too and then realise the world owes nobody a living.

The activation team are NOT Microsoft employees and they would have given a much more concise answer than "not valid on that system".
What exactly did the activation number say about the code?

Got told that it wasn't a correct code and i must be reading it off wrong. This went back and forth for a bit. Then it apparently accepted it but the system timed out when generating an activation code. He put it through again and same thing. Third time he came back and said it wasnt a xp key but windows me. Funny how its the code stuck to the side of the case and clearly says windows xp pro. This was after trying the online activation and automated phone one with no luck multiple times.

Tried tonight with a different pro code no longer in use and still no luck with the auto activation will try with a person tomorrow. God knows what has happened, can't unnderstand how everything has been fine for 4-5 years and then this happens out of the blue

Back when I had my first copy of XP I had a hookie of XPHOME

One day I activated it without thinking before I could crack it, and it went in just fine.

So, the next time I installed it, I tried again.

Now, I soon bought myself the full retail of XP Pro and here is the funny thing.

After 3 times of activating XP Pro ( Yes, on the same PC - I always reinstalled after a few months ) but it moaned at me and would not let me do it... I phoned MS to find out why and they too would not activate it.

The funny thing, is that that old copy of XP Home never once gave any trouble.

Things are different now, I bought legal copies of course, but that RETAIL XP Pro never did activate again, and I cracked it but the hookie Home one always activated.

I might give them both a try just to see now...
