GTX470 or 5870OC for minimums?

Gotta admit Rroff, the two gigabytes i got are crackers. Factory oc cards as well. Had them for just over a year, ran oc'd 90% of that time. I clean them every few weeks with a compressor. My biggest problem was getting cool air to them. The stock front intake fans on my lian li were dire. And theres a fair distance from the fans to the gpu area. Bought a pair of silverstone 140mm air penetrator fans, a world of difference. 70c max on each card with bf3. My old gtx 275's ran a heck of a lot hotter.

@setter, normally I would agree, but with the case of the 47/80's at the time, there was the real possibility of factoring in the cost of buying a new psu to power it, rather than just use your existing psu with the 5870.

47/80 launch prices + a new psu wasn't something a lot of people were willing to pay.
Understand what you mean. Luckily for me, i already had an 850w psu, (corsair hx). And i bought my two cards about a year ago. One cost £214.00, the second cost £189.00. But i saved a fair bit by selling my two gtx 275's for £130.00 and the game codes that came with each of the new cards. I also heard that the 5870 wasnt much of an overclocker, and tbh ati/amd's driver support is a bit dire, nvidias isnt perfect either tbh. But recent driver releases have really improved things, even on old cards such as the 400 series.

I'm wondering how the 7970 (ignoring VRAM and potential multi GPU disadvantages) will stack up performance and price wise against GTX470 SLI :D seeing as I've had a good year plus at probably similiar performance and it only cost me slightly over £300.

Ill be waiting till nvidias next release. But i wont be going for the high end card. One medium range and add another later. sli has really matured over the years, i started out on pc's with 6800gt's in sli. Poor drivers, microstutter were a few issues. For me it really settled down with the g80 series, (had two 640mb gts cards). Then went to g90 8800gts 512's. My gtx 275's were nice cards, but i could never oc them as they ran far to hot even at stock.

Fully overclocked i reckon the gtx470 will probably have a lead. I never run multi gpu but often play on my mates 6970 cfx system and before this 5970, 4890 cfx, and 8800gtx sli. To me these systems were smooth. You know your stuff, nothing more than next gen dual gpu will be a real upgrade unless amd or nvidia bring a 9700/8800 type card.

Heres hoping as i will be upgrading.

You can't really ignore the vram though. I have a pair of GTX 295 co op and they destroy benchmarks.

Sadly they're about as useful for BF3 as a chocolate teapot is for holding boiling water.
