Caught Speeding

Which is why I'm not using this thread to bitch about how it's unfair and how can I get off it, I said that in the first post but 46 in a 40, come on

It was tounge it cheek in relation to this Post ;)

I do however agree 46 in a 40 is a little harsh for point. Same happened to me on a dual carriage way that had a 40 limit. (I was doing 46) Got £60 + 3 points, gutted.

No, thats a myth. Speedos are always calibrated so if it shows 50 on your speedo, you'll actually be doing 46-48ish, it allows for margin of error on the part of wheel tred, tyre size, road surface etc.... so if you're speeding by 5mph+ you are definitely speeding unless your speedo is broken

opposite fella.

if you are doing 40mph on the speedo, you are probably doing a true 36-40. Speedo's have to either over read or be bang on, they will NEVER be designed to under read speeds. You are probably one of those guys i follow around at 20mph in 30mph zones? Although saying that probably not if you have six points... My bad.

Also, if you have fitted different size wheels have you made sure they match size wise to your standard rolling circumference? http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html for instance will help.

I'd rather crash at 46 than 90, regardless of where I'm driving lol

You have to think about impact speed. You hit someone head on the other way doing the same speed as you and the impact speed is 92mph. Hit a car doing 70 while you're doing 90 in the same direction on the motorway and the impact speed is 20mph.

This is why so many more accidents on single carriageways result in death.

I don't believe points should be given for 46 in a 40. A fine should be levied only.

My own personal opinion anyway.

How would that work out? If I were in a hurry and late for a meeting for example I may decide it worth the cost of the fine...? I wouldn't make that choice with points?

Even the idea of say 2 strikes and you get points...If I'm currently at Nil strikes it'll essentially encourage speeding not negate it. It becomes almost a purchasable option?

Personally it's the points that put me off, not the fine.

46 in a 40 does seem harsh though, but then again I guess it depends on the road?

No like I said, it's a myth, and Kenai, thanks I just realised I meant what you said. Fixed it now

The 10% + 2mph are the ACPO guidelines and most forces use them in cameras and safety vans. However you cam be prosecuted for 1mph over the limit if they wanted to. Speedos should never over read.

Wouldn't an actual speed of 46mph show on your speedo as 49-50mph?
Legally speedos can't underread at all therefore in general they all tend to overread to ensure compliance. This is from the factory though, changing wheels and tyre profiles etc could throw that out.

Aren't you allowed 10% of the speed limit? So 44MPH max before you get clocked?
Total myth.

Am a bit confused about the apparent outrage at being done for 46 in a 40. The limit was presumably signposted, you knew what it was, and no one forced you to go above 40? What's the point of speed limit signs saying 30, 40, etc if the "real" limit is higher? Besides which if it was established that the "real" limit was 10%+2 before points, then people would go at least that speed all of the time given the remote chance as it is of being stopped. Congratulations you've made speed limit signs completely meaningless.

Lol, not exactly outraged, just a bit annoyed, I wasn't joyriding or breaking in to a house, and don't give me crap about "the law is the law" I know that and I accept that I broke it, but don't they have better things to do that sit in a layby like catching rapists or beating up protesters?

3 points on your license = I got caught once
6 points = I'm an idiot and I didn't learn from the last time
9 points = I'm probably going to get banned soon, probably shouldn't have my license anyway
12 points = Well it was fun while it lasted. ****ing police lol

Hope you get banned asap OP.

Your attitude is pathetic, you got caught - pay up.

This is coming from someone who is not a big fan of arbitrary speed limits and much more a fan of appropriate speed. Should tell you something.

I know exactly how you feel. I recently got a speeding NIP through the post. After some discussion we realised it was my wife and we took it on the chin. We were driving back from hospital doing 39 in a 30. We had genuinely thought it was a 40 zone, hence the 39mph speed. (we simply don't speed - it's not worth it and neither of us are exaclty young and foolish nowadys). I said at the time that it felt like we were being penalised for one simple mistake and it still does. Still... speeding is speeding for whatever reason. But I do understand exactly how you feel.

She was offered the speed awareness course (£90 which is more than the fine would be, but it avoids points). She has it this week so I'm half tempted to collect her and wheel spin out of the car park when she's finished (not serious).

Considering you seem to have a 'whatever' attitude, you'll no doubt think twice in future before breaking the speed limit.
