Hi all,

I've just bought a Crucial RealSSD M4 512GB (firmware 0009) as an upgrade for my 2009 17" MacBook Pro.

I'm currently running 10.6.8 but will be upgrading to Lion 10.7.2. I have a couple of questions:

* By upgrading straight to Lion do I need to do anything to enable TRIM in OS X?
* Is there anything else I need to be aware of? I read somewhere that incremental system updates will disable TRIM support so you have to re-enable again - anyone know about this?

Thanks for any replies - sorry if these questions have been asked hundreds of times before, just new to the whole SSD thing - been reading through threads but I've found no definative answers anywhere. Can't wait to see the boost its going to give my machine :)
 
Things you need to know:

1. The trim enabler will work on lion as well as sl and usually needs to be run after updates (its worth a check either way to make sure) but you'll have to use it to get trim on the non apple ssd.

2. It'll be AWESOME! Best possible upgrade to any pc or mac, I did it to my 15 inch 09 pro last summer with the c300 256 and it was amazing! The drive is still amazingly fast in my pc too (getting a new mac for uni which wont have one though which is sad)

So yeah get ready to have a new reason to hug your mac :) (remember it'll appreciate a hug once you've upgraded it)
 
Thanks for the reply pingwing. I installed the drive today and have loaded Lion 10.7.2 on it and must say its impressively quick - feels like a new machine!

To any Mac owners with 3rd party SSDs - have you enabled TRIM in OSX? I haven't done so yet - is this recommended? Could it cause problems if I do/don't? I',m a bit wary of hacking OSX in anyway unless I really need too ...
 
I'd do it as soon as possible just to be on the safe side for the ssd performance... :)

It's not a real hack anyway, just a renaming of a file so it thinks that the ssd is an apple one instead of a non apple one ;) (and a few othe rthings too but basically it can't really break your system but is good to make sure it keeps the performance up)

Awesome it feels like you have a new mac too :D

I've had it enabled on all of mine - including: 2009 MacMini with a Crucial M225, 2010 MBP, 2011 MBP early & Late, 2010 MBA, 2011 MBA, and an iMac.

Had no problems with any of them.
 
OK cheers guys, I've seen a couple of ways of enabling TRIM in OS X. One is a utility and another via terminal commands. Which are you both using?

The trim enabler utility thing :) (it might say just snow leopard but worked fine with lion)

One click and away I was after a reboot
