Which first perrson shooter to relight my passion for gaming?

Havent gamed in years, well properly any way. Got a really poweful pc and thought it was time to start making use of it :)

Its importacent that the gane I play first is good as will just throw the towel in if I get bored. Graphicsbis important as I gane on a 120" screen, I have a gtx570 as well

What do you think?

Stalker.

Pour a drink for the guys who made the game as well. They're no more.

What happened to all the non war-based fps games? I miss the days when the FPS genre didn't consist entirely of the CoD and BF series.

Trolling?

Battlefield 3 is terrible.

I say World of Tanks.

I agree, BF3 is a great idea but for a new or returning player it's a lot of tough love. While it does look nice it's often dependant on team play for success which is great if you happen to have plenty of contacts and time to commit but for the unpredictable odd hour in the evening now and then you end up playing in Rambo mode.... a lone soldier dies a lot.

A good pilot in a Jet or especially a chopper can make the big maps hard work, often they'll be base raping or you're under fire before you get half way to the combat zone. You might think you'll learn to fly....

Well that usually goes, power..... take off, what ... someone has a lock already ... bang..... and thanks to Dice there is no way to practice and you don't get any defences for the plane chopper until you score some points with it, which is tough when you often have less than 30 seconds of flight. You can't even customise your character without being joined to a server.

The biggest issue though is the whole 'unlocks' process'. If you're new to the game you have a basic gun and the odd other accessory dependant on speciality. Meanwhile those who've played for 50 - 100 hours + have a whole array of better kit meaning you're just cannon fodder, especially vs. vehicles.

The game should either offer ranked matches to pitch you against similar skill / unlock level or should offer a borderlands style scoring system where if you take out a higher ranking player you level up faster.

While this has turned into a semi rant, BF3 is a poor game for a returning player unless you have lots of previous experience of these type of games. I probably get a good game 1 in 5 times though ironically I level up far faster in death match where at least there are no vehicles spamming all the infantry with fire so you can concentrate on cover and movement.

I've had a far better time with L4D and L4D 2, Borderlands for a while though it got repetitive, Bioshock, even a replay of half-life 2. I can't bring myself to splash even more cash for 'Back to Karkland'... I don't even know why I still play it....

I have no idea if it is any good but have a look at Earth Defense Force on steam, currently 25% off but may get another price drop in the sales.

Deus ex HR first. BF3 looks great and can be great but you will be frustrated plenty playing at first plus you will be playing against people with all unlocks and full map knowledge and you will have none.

I will dip back into bf3 but I'm replaying Deus Ex HR again because it's so consistently brilliant.

Also Batman Arkham city is brilliant.

OP, are you playing at 1080p?

What are the last "amazing" FPS games you played on PC? What made that game (or games) so amazing?

If you want to be blown away by graphical and audio supremacy that is best-in-class, go for BF3 - but mind that it is a MP game first and foremost, so subject to the quibbles of online play. In my experience, this varies your mood from ecstatic to frustrated in the space of a round.

If you want the technical brilliance combined with a decent SP game, then I would recommend Crysis and Crysis:Warhead, Metro 2033, and possibly Stalker.

It all depends on what you want out of it.

im in the same position as the OP.. just about to get a gaming laptop and looking for something to rekindle my love of fps

last thing i played was COD and (shoot the zombies, cant remember the name)

but reviews for the newest COD seem to be really bad

cod 4 think ill go play now :D

bf3 if you want to play the hype machine :p looks nice but is basically not as good as other fps games made years ago

get SERIOUS SAM 3 BFE, it's an adenalin fuelled mayhem shooter, its like a much better version of Painkiller, i'm about half way through.... some of the battles are extremely hard, it's fairly tactical, plus you can hide too.

but you die a lot..... even on easy mode, especially from those Deathclaw Skeleton things :D

he sprints extremely fast, it looks like about 40 miles per hour and even his normal running is very fast too, so nothing can catch you, you can retreat all the way back to the beginning of the map in about 30 seconds. the maps look quite good, as does the lighting, skies etc, but it's not nearly as artistic/ atmospheric as Painkiller

there are a few things i dont like
1..... it's quite hard to cycle the right weapon quickly, you either end up with a sledgehammer, your fists or C5, this gets me killed all the time
2.... not enough ammo and he wont reload whilst sprinting
3.... the pump action shot gun is crap and the assult rifle is a bit dodgy too
4.... some of the AI is crap, especially the big bosses, the ones you have to watch out for are the skeletons and the SUICIDE guys, there are so many of them, i've never run so much in my life

whilst many FPS are generic and boring as hell, this ain't, it's for die hard FPS only, it's nothing like COD or rubbish like that.

conclusion:- i'm surprised how good it is, but you do die a lot if you stand still

Looking at this thread I have to disagree, except for the part of jets. I am new to fps's but cope quite well in BF3 and I get taken out by very low levels (often).
We all have our own opinions but for visuals this to me is outstanding and for repeat playability I personally have found nothing that beats it.
Just my opinion though and as I said we all have different tastes.
