Which first perrson shooter to relight my passion for gaming?

Deus ex HR first. BF3 looks great and can be great but you will be frustrated plenty playing at first plus you will be playing against people with all unlocks and full map knowledge and you will have none.

I will dip back into bf3 but I'm replaying Deus Ex HR again because it's so consistently brilliant.

Also Batman Arkham city is brilliant.

This would be my personal recommendation as well.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an excellent game. It's got a gripping story and you'll want to keep playing it. BF3 has been suggested and it will look really really nice on your computer but it's a pretty bad game in comparison and honestly it's not very compelling for someone just returning to gaming. HR Looks pretty nice too anyway.

I agree with what someone said before bf3 is a joke on big maps when you got baserape with choppers I can barely move on the new maps I'm glad I didn't pay for the dlc but I wouldn't Evan pay 8 quid for them I'd only pay for the 1943 map and that's it and that still a joke

have read very mixed reviews about BF3, some love it, some hate it

I love it but I suck at it. I'm always left with no vehicles. Too few stay to jump in a plane, chopper or tank. Haven't played BF since 2005. Any fps games I have been use to were tiny maps and players all spawned at the same time. At times it feels worse than Crysis. I feel so lost in a lot of these gigantic maps and by the time I have worked out where I am, I've been taken out by a Sniper. Yet I haven't a clue where he was.

I find it so annoying when one player always runs for a plane or chopper and leave the others who are still running for the vehicles. Or worse, you do get in a plane or chopper, you've been flying for less than a minute and they bail. This was one of the things that put me off Battlefield 2. More time running across land so far to then get shot by a sniper.

Without casusing a war! lol am I right in thinking I should do all my gaming via PC with my GTX570 rather than my PS3 or xbox 360 ?

Depends what you feel better with. 9 times out of 10 the PC versions will look a lot better, gameplay will be the same. So yeah if you prefer better graphics PC gaming is the way to go imo. Most games you can use a 360 pad as well so you get the best of both worlds, better graphics and a nice pad to use :)

FPS should always be done on a PC.

I prefer keyboard/mouse though.

I haven`t touched BF3 since I got Skyrim just don`t enjoy it. You can play Skyrim as an FPS though, if shooting arrows count :D

i'm beginning to wish that i hadn't got SERIOUS SAM 3, bloody hell it's hard work, especially if you're low on health and outflanked, it's actually quite a clever game, much more so than Painkiller, in the later stages it gets so much harder, i played from 3pm to 2am yesterday

i spent an hour trying to get out of a wooden hut with only +4 health, with 20 skeletons outside, i really hate it in a game when they can claw you through the wood and open windows etc, even though they've missed you by miles, games over the years have never got this right.

it's a very tiring game, the battle arenas are massive, it's wave after wave of AI, but at the same time it's still great fun...i'm surprised how much time you spend underground in Labyrinths or under Pyramids, with these ******* puzzles to solve, it reminds me of DOOM 3, none of this is mentioned in the reviews.... it's so bloody dark down there, very claustrophobic.

Serious Sam is a right idiot, but he's not as stupid as Duke, both games suffer from really crap diologue, SS3 is a miles better game anyway

You are doing it wrong.

BULLETSTORM....:D

Most enjoyable, downright fun FPS of 2011.

Unreal Engine 3 never looked so amazing..

I bought RO2, hated it for the crap performance and bugs. AvP, poor use of the license. BF3, meh . . .decent but not amazing, makes me rage. Downloading Metro 2033 for the SP, hope it's decent. If not then I give up on fps shooters all together.

no-one lives forever, brilliant fps game, will take advantage of all the expensive gear your eager to tell us all about

As someone else has already pointed out, what did you play 'back in the day?' What did you like then?

There are a few options in my view:

Single Player:
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat for an excellent, in depth almost RPG-like FPS where you do most of the learning yourself in an open map
-Metro 2033 for an excellent linear (but still with options) story-driven FPS that's hard as nails and very good looking and atmospheric
-Crysis/Crysis Warhead for a kind-of-linear-ish experience with wonderful graphics, excellent feel and a fair story

Multi-player:
-Call of Duty Modern Warfare III for just some fun messing about shooting lots of people as fast as you can, and not much more.
-Left 4 Dead 2 if you've got some willing mates to play with (preferably three for the Co-Op mode) for some co-op zombie smash 'em in
-Counterstrike Global Offensive when it comes out could well be a good alternative to CSS & 1.6 finally after all these years.

I leave BF3 out, as it didn't enthral me whatsoever (basically on large maps, if you want to do well, you have to have a tank/vehicle, and since I play World of Tanks, I might as well just play that instead. BF3 is ok, but not as good as I was hoping), whereas the games above have (although MW2 rather than MW3, but they're identical anyway, and obviously CS which isn't out)
