im looking around for a desktop for the parents ( no overclocking ) and was looking at the i5 2400, cpu mainly used for web browsing watching videos. her old desktop which is one of purple **** brigade specials with a pentium p4 in it, she is running a 26" screen and i think this is what her old pc is struggling with even though its got a low end ati 1gb card in it ( IE is using 100% cpu when browsing)

main question for it is would the internal graphics on the i5 be enough for a screen this size?

also what is the main difference between the i5 2400 and the i5 2320? (the main thing i can see is the max memory allowance being 8gig on the 2400)

if anythingelse you guys can reccomend with a budget of 4-500 inc windows.

thanks in advance

edit the memory side of things is due to this 2400 being on a h61 chipset ( is there any problem with this)

I would go for a Celeron G530 or G540 or a Llano A4 3300 or A4 3400. The A4 has an IGP which is similar in performance to an HD6450. IE9 onwards has GPU acceleration too. If you look around at some other major retailers you can get A55 and A75 motherboards for around £45 to £55.

A Core i3 2100 is OTT for web browsing. I use one myself in my main build with an HD5850 1GB.

thanks for the replies guys, i see where your both coming from, but my mom buys a pc about every 6 or 7 years and would rather spend the little extra now so it will last as long as poss.

ive got no problem at all with amd ( got 1090 myself) but i5 seems a lot more for not much more dosh.

also can someone answer the internal graphics question about it running a 26" screen

thanks again

Check my previous answer. More applications are becoming GPU accelerated and remember even Windows 8 is meant to be more efficient than Windows 7. Most modern IGPs offload video decoding from the CPU so you really don't need something massively powerful. Even WinZip is now accelerated by DX11 IGPs such as those found in Llano or the upcoming Ivy Bridge.

If you really want to go OTT,then something like a Core i3 2100 or Llano A6 or A8 would be what you should look for.

What system do your parents have ATM??

<snip>

More importantly, which operating system?

I spent some time a month or so ago decluttering three different XP systems which were all running like dogs.
They had all become furred up with bits of extra software and browser add ons and tool bars.

If the system is XP then it should still run nearly as fast as when it was new once it has been cleaned out.
I assume it has at least 1Gb RAM?

Also, what resolution is the 26" screen running at?
Resolution is the important thing, not the physical size of the screen :)

Quite often, running at 100% when browsing is a sign that the browser itself is cluttered.

You could try an alternative browser (Firefox, Chrome etc.) to see if a clean install of a browser without toolbars and add-ons runs a lot faster with much less CPU useage.

After that, tell your Mum it is broken and start building your new system.;)

Cheers

Hi,

I built my mother in law an intel system for windows 7 using an i3-2100 in a H67 motherboard and 4gb of 1333mhz ddr3 ram with a 500gb sata3 hard drive. She needed it for office work and web browsing and she was over the moon with it. This was done within your budget.
