Am I being 'tight' not wanting to share my broadband with a mate?

tell him you won't be getting a wi-fi router, and will be using ethernet, then put your wi-fi as "hidden" or to an obscure name not connected to you, so he doesn't know it's your wi-fi.

or

tell him he need to pay half the monthly bill and when he doesn't you will change the key.

this is only fair imo, regardless of his circumstances, he doesn't need any more handouts than what he already gets, i'm assuming he is on benefits and gets carer's allowance

You're so generous.

Give him the code, tell him not to abuse it or use torrents etc.
It's not a case of being generous, even to those with unfortunate circumsances. It's a case of paying your way.

If a lodger was smoking, and asked to use my internet, I'd wonder why they didn't stop smoking and pay for their own connection. Or even pay half of the subcscription fee with me.

Actually read the OP now.

I would still give him access to the BB, but use it as an opportunity to have a heart to heart with him and get him back on the straight and narrow. With the personal tragedy he has experienced, it would do him good for someone to speak personally but frankly to him. You will catch more with honey (or however it goes), in the form of him giving up weed and getting back on the path.

who the hells charging you £130 for a new line? personally i wouldnt charge nor be bothered to share bb specially if your getting the 50mb from virgin if thats the £30 a month one your on about

edit: thats for a friend btw, wouldnt just give it to some random stranger.. lol

Meh, I would, as long as he knows he can't be using on demand services all day long etc.

If it's for just using now and again, I wouldn't have a problem with it. As soon as it impacts my service, I'd change the key

This is what I would do, or be preemptive and throttle him somehow.

Either that or just ditch said mate,

Set your IP/MAC Address to High Priority
Set a any torrent traffic at lowest
Either guarantee your bandwidth (Get it when you need it but he can use the full line when you dont) or hard cap his (No more than X up and Y down)

Block everything but Ports 25, 80, 110, 143 and 443 for outbound connections. That way he can only use it for e-mail and web surfing.

Most routers, even those without QoS, can do this.

What if this lad downloads any "images of kids" and it comes back to you, even if the truth did come out your image would be tarnished for life.

Lol. Paranoid much?

He should contribute a bit - maybe not half if he's a light user but he can't just freeload.

how about you take the full sky package out for £100 a month then let your mate use a "2nd box" add-on for £6 a month where he gets all the same channels as you do but pays practically nothing for it?

can't you just get a standard router and connect your PC via ethernet? assuming you don't need wireless connectivity on your phone of course.

"erm, what network key? i dont even have wifi mate"

Could work, but that would not stop him using the full bandwidth on, for example, a video streaming site.

You would also want to unblock SSL/TLS encrypted email ports.

BT charge £130 to connect a disconnected line. I told them to sod off and went to plus.net who still charged £50 but then they knocked that off my first 3 months bills so it didn't really cost me anything.

It was in reference to the give him 1KB/s, which is unusable. If I was a lodger I'd expect to have basic internet access as part of the bills included (and would have made sure before lodging with someone).

Agreed, if the lodger had agreed that his rent included sharing of the router, then fine.

However, the OP's lodger expects the BB to be dished out to him for free. Restricting it to 1KB/sec might give him a hint.
