Question for the Mods and closing threads

It's ignored pretty much every time that's the only reason I'm bringing it up, it's pathetic that such a small amount of power is abused.. One rather recent incident in mind (but that's enough of that).

It's extremely rare to see a scenario where a Don has said something bannable, have you got an example?

I think you're attempting to paint them in a light which is entirely false.

I'm suprised this is sort of malarkey is tolerated these days; days gone by it was definately "keep low move fast"... :D

You miss the good old days where it was an iron fist in a velvet glove but without the velvet glove? :p

I can see what you're saying, that being said it wouldn't be hard to see who was just "trolling" or being an idiot when posting an opinion.

What would be the benefits though? Or perhaps more pertinently would the benefits outweigh the disadvantages?

Some people will accept thread closures/moderation with good grace and acknowledge that there was a reason why action was taken - a number of people simply won't and they're the ones more likely to voice a grievance against a moderator. I'm not saying that the moderation here is perfect, not by a long way, but what is to be gained by opening up another avenue for people to complain about moderation?

On the upside it's very much the exception rather than the rule.

It also details things like name changes and the like.

Basically any time a mod takes an action on an account more serious than a minor edit, or moving a thread we are likely to make a note of it (or try to).

The reason is it lets all the mods track what is going on at a glance, and how often we've had to deal with them.
For example if someone has had 3 name changes (at their request) in a year I may refuse to do another one for 6 months.
Or if someone keeps getting suspended for the same thing we can deal with it differently (IE a longer suspension and a specific warning).

Sorry another query on the note system.
Do you make a note of positive acts? I.e. if someone has been exceptionally helpful to another poster in a thread or made a positive contribution in some other way is this also noted?

Well it's hard to say whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages as I've never seen a moderation team give anyone the chance to critique them. I was simply thinking you could keep comments about the admin team contained in one area and it would allow (eventually) for sensible discussion. It could improve the forum, it could not. I was really just thinking aloud to be perfectly hoenst.

The only issue with that is making changes to the way the forum is moderated requires Spie's approval, which may not be forthcoming.

Indeed. I must admit, the Dons (at least used to) discuss moderating decisions better than most of the other forums I frequent. There are some very long threads in the DR. That said, moderation isn't the most consistent it could be, but that's not the Don's fault.

Given that this is one of the most active forums in the UK, it's not a wonder that some things slip through the net. Do you guys even get paid for this shizzle?

Nope and we don't expect to either.

Exactly. I've seen costs going through some business where they are paying tens of thousands for moderators for their forums.

I'm not saying you get what you pay for and that's why it's allegedly rubbish... More saying that for something that is run for free, the service is exceptional.

Nope and we don't expect to either.

And despite this, you still seem to do alright :p For the most part, we have a very, very good team of moderators here who put lots of thankless time and effort into maintaining this community. It's not easy, especially when you deal with the MM (so extra kudos to Maccy and Thundy) and they often get more abuse then they get thank you messages, but we need them to keep this place being the rich community it is.

I'm not here to boost any egos, most Dons here have enough of that :D but I know how much work goes in behind the scenes and it really is a big commitment that doesn't get recognised enough by general members.

2 of them are regarding your username changes, so it's only really 5. I'm not going into detail though.
